Product: 1593271417 Who needs a specialist distro or Vyatta? Get this book and you’ll be up and running in no time. I thought the content was presented in a logical manner, concise, clear and very informative. From IPTables novice to expert, there is a lot of good information in this book. If you want to understand the inner-workings of firewall based distros or products like Vyatta - or Brocade, whatever they call themselves these days - this is a good start.

Product: 1590594584 This books is really useful if you’ve got some Windows experience and want to try SuSe as a desktop platform. It covers all desktop tools in great details, tells how to work with office documents, multimedia, burning CDs, building dual boot systems, etc. Actually the best part of this book is not really Linux itself, but all extra apps you need to use under SuSE to get your common tasks done.

Product: 0321636783 I got hired for a job where I spend almost everyday working in a Unix/Linux environment and I had very little knowledge of how to get around the system. In the week I had off between jobs I picked up this book and a book on Apache 2 and first day I went in I hit the ground running, even knowing a couple things my co-workers did not. That greatly put my mind to ease.

Product: 1593270348 The book is very helpful in setting up a Fedora Linux installation if the accomopaning disks were complete. The insturctions in the book were clear and concise. My problem was that I have only one hard drive and needed to repartition it using a partition program. (I used Partition Magic.) When it came time to load the linux supplied with the book onto the machine, it had difficulty recognizing the partions and did not load properly.

Product: 0596009658 I’m teaching a class at my office (I have over 45 years experience with Unix, Solaris, Linux, HP-UX, AIX, etc.) for technical folks and programmers who are migrating from a Windows environment to a Linux (RHEL6) enviroinment. In previous sessions of a class like this but on other OS’s (Solaris and HP-UX primarily) I had concentrated on the Korn shell (which I still like); but for this class I decided to emphasize Bash instead as it’s the defacto standard on Linux (and has features that some other shells are lacking).

Product: 0132354136 Good first book for new to computer and Linux types. Lots of history, purpose, flavors and what they do. Touches on most subjects well enough to get you started and help you focus on what you will need help on next. As a long term computer/system user I’ve ordered more specific books already. Looking online will get you most of what’s here, but this concentrates it. Also you will find lots of info online and most of it is excellent.

Product: 0738203335 I very much enjoyed this book. Mr Moody writes well and entertainingly about the origins of the Free Software Foundation and the Open Source Movement. The historic characters in the drama are well drawn and engaging. Time and again I’d remark ‘So, that’s where he/it came from!’ as Moody traced the origin of Apache or Samba or Alan Cox. I was very much reminded of the excellent history of the PC ‘Fire in the Valley’ that traces the origins of the PC industry to where we find it today.

Product: 0596002726 I own the 3rd edition of this book and liked it so much that I ordered the 4th edition as soon as it came out. If you are interested in learning how to become a power linux user, this is the book for you. The book does a nice job teaching you the fundamentals of linux and system administration. And the best thing about the book is that it is distrobution independant.
