Product: 151182607X This book begins with a brief introduction about linux and how this kind of operating system is extremely advantageous in our IT industry. The creation of Linux began as a free owned operating system by Linus Torvalds in which Linux name is a contraction of Linus and UNIX. This book had covered all the essential linux commands that I need to start with. Rating: 4 151182607X Count: 33

Product: 1449316697 This book won’t teach you everything, I think it just scratches the surface of what linux can do. But if you just need a quick cheat sheet or want to use linux more, buy it. Rating: 5 1449316697 Count: 22

Product: 1584503718 Well-rounded coverage of essential topics for someone who needs to know what is Linux programming. Linux is open source, and there is already tons of information out there on the net. This book provides good perspective if you do not want to get distracted by all the noise online, but focus on developing an understanding to build upon. A programmer should rather buy this book than something like ‘Linux in a Nutshell’.

Product: UNIX and Linux System Administration Handbook As an intermediate level Linux person, I find this book to Very good and informative. It exposed me to new ideas that I should know. It is not however, 100% comprehensive on certain subjects, which is why I didn’t give it five stars. For example, in the chapter discussing startup and shutdown, it goes into a discussion of rc.d symbolic links to init.d services and it talks about the S## and K## prefixes, which it covers well; but it fails to go in-depth about runlevels and which ones are used on each platform for reboot, startup, shutdown, etc.

Product: 0596002726 The world of Linux is pretty deep and rather disorganized, so as a newbie I was overwhelmed by the amount of resources that will sure help me in the end but did not give me a clue where to start. After all, Linux is not Windows, which all the dummies in the world use. Running Linux was a very helpful resource for me to get started with almost anything that I know about Linux today.

Product: 0470467010 This book was a great disappointment for many reasons. Although it was somewhat informative, it lacked any real depth and was not completely accurate. The author seemed to confuse himself at times and became contradictory. The accompanying system disks were not true to the book’s description and there was not enough descriptive material in the book (or disc setup instructions) to get an acceptable system started. I got the feeling that the author was in a terrible hurry to get this book out and never really proof read his own work or had someone who could have done it help out.

Product: 0596100299 Unix in a Nutshell is not for the faint-hearted. It tries to be a concise reference on Unix but ends up being incomplete (esp. with regard to Linux). A lot of commands are explained cursorily without complete options or examples. The presentation is often confusing; witness the chapters on shell programming. If you know nothing about Unix, don’t even consider this book; it’ll get you nowhere and more frustrate than ever.
