Product: LINUX: The Ultimate Beginner’s Guide! Best thing about it was the cute drawing on the cover. Acronyms and abbreviations were used with defining them. I learned nothing useful from this book. I put it into the newspaper recycling bin. I’m just starting to learn how to use Linux (Ubuntu and Debian). Not a good reason to kill a tree, not even a small one. Rating: 1 1519453477 Count: 34

Product: 0596002726 This is a general book on Linux and with a general guide to installing Linux. With 2 chapters and 43 pages on installation, its general procedures are next to useless. There is no specific distribution and hardware so at least your installation can be modelled from it. At least there is a few hints like using Fdisk with /MBR (p88) for dual boot Win/Linux machines. Almost all of the book is oriented to the command line within a terminal window.

Product: 0764547976 Although it is claimed that this 2nd edition has been updated for RH Linux v7.0 from v6.2, it doesn’t show any updates using the GUI admin improvements included with RH Linux 7.0. The limits of GUI is Xwindows using Xfree86, tacked on in Chap 14. Most of the install processes are the typical woefully inadequate, glossed-over, dated procedures for v6 through a command line. No showing of a typical server installation which is the main subject of book, but then the author has another book for Server 7, 0-7645-4786-0

Product: 0131478230 I have read this book and can say that it contains a detailed and thorough explanation of the Linux shell. It starts out with a history lesson of the GNU/Linux operating system and features a detailed explanation of how to interact with the shell via editors such as vim and emacs. Further on, the author discusses scripting languages such as Perl and Python. I can say that this book has allowed me to be able to

Product: The Linux Command Line: A Complete Introduction This book covers many different aspects of the Linux command line that other books do not. It works by allowing you to start you off from the beginning showing you what the command line is and helping new Linux users get the hang of working inside it. I thought it was a good feature when the book shows users how to customize their shell to their liking.

Product: 0596001088 I came to this book expecting something more eloquent or profound. Instead the book has a series of observations from ESR based on his experience managing an open source project, fetchmail, while trying to extract and apply lessons from the Linux community: - Good software starts by scratching a developer’s personal itch. - Great programmers know what to reuse. - Plan to throw one away (Fred Brooks). - If you have the right attitude interesting problems will find you.

Product: 1449362346 I came to the Raspberry Pi from a background of the Arduino. I am very proficient at the arduino and wanted to move to a microcontroller with more horsepower. While I am technically competent, I don’t know Linux. I found migration to the Raspberry Pi to be very frustrating. The user base of the pi is much more limited, and hence less online tutorials and helps. Also, among the more active forums, there is often time an assumption that you already know Linux, or if you don’t know Linux, you do not deserve any help.

Product: The Linux Command Line: A Complete Introduction An extremely good guide to the Linux command prompt. The examples are succinct and useful, the explanations are clear and coherent and the layout makes it a pleasure to read. Moreover, unlike other computer publishers, No Starch Press employs proofreaders who do their job properly. Rating: 5 1593273894 Count: 86

Product: 0596007876 This book comes with a Knoppix bootable CD. However, I could not get my laptop to boot with it. It got stuck at a fairly early stage. This was surprising since I have successfully booted with both Mandrake and Suse. The book did tell me how to download Knoppix from the internet but it’s 700 MB so a CD would be better. This book is most useful if you are already an experienced
