Product: 0596007582 This book says it’s a system administrator’s guide. Since I’m not a sysadmin but more of a hacker with Linux, I found lots of details seemed to be glossed over. If you are looking for a high level explanation of making Linux work with a Windows network, this book is for you. Most Linux books seem to assume you know more than you (I) do. I haven’t found any one Linux book that tells me everything I need to know to get some server running, such as Samba.

Product: 059600754X This books comes with a bootable CD. It didn’t work on an old desktop system but it did work on my laptop. I was instantly in a Mandrake-like Linux environment. This book is well written. It uses plain English so you don’t have to be a geek to understand it. It’s ideal for all levels of audiences. I’d buy another book by this author. He’s good. The coverage of this book is very thorough.

Product: 0596009119 This book arrived on a day when my Linux wasn’t cooperating. I looked in the book’s table of contents to see if it had any hack I could use. I immediately found several useful ones. I was able to solve my networking problem of the day. This book has 100 hacks. You are not going to use all of them. But you will use enough to find this book worth the cost.

Product: 0596006403 This book has an eclectic collection of recipes to problems I didn’t even know I wanted solved! For example, I didn’t know I could virus scan my Windows OS using Knoppix. Many of this book’s recipes are so simple to use, all you need is to take 30 seconds to read the problem to see if it describes your pain. If so, then you implement the quick recipe. In many cases, you can skip the discussion.

Product: 0672336936 I think this is a good summary of the more important things about Ubuntu. It doesn’t go into the depth I wished for. for instance, the Unity GUI is so weird for the standard Windows user (talking about Windows up to version 7 here) that more material on this would be necessary. Unity is the first thing you see about Ubuntu Linux and it is hard to master so I think there should be more material on this.

Product: 1430248211 Having purchased a Raspberry Pi, I wanted to do as much as I can with it. This book helps a lot. As I teach Linux for a small university, I was looking for something to catch the attention of my students. I like this book so much, I’m considering adopting it as the course text and having each of the students use a Pi for the semester. Rating: 5 1430248211 Count: 13

Product: 1593271441 This book gives some good breakdown to coding and processor instructions. The included CD is an antiquated version of Ubuntu which is very out dated and has security issues in itself. I am an IT pro, I have been using Linux since RedHat version 1 and I am a user of it daily in my professional and personal life. The CD is so outdated that it will not load on any of my newer machines outside of a VM… inside the VM it has issues as well with the network and monitor resolutions… very much a P.

Product: UNIX and Linux System Administration Handbook It is a rare pleasure to hold this wonderfully produced book in your hands and study the 1000+ pages packed with just the right balance of facts and a judicious peppering of opinion. After all, if you didn’t want opinion, for example on which scripting tool/language to use or what sort of hard disk to install, you could very well just read the manuals.
