Product: Linux for Beginners: An Introduction to the Linux Operating System and Command Line As someone who always has trouble using Linux, I found this book easy to understand unlike other beginners guides that use very intimidating terms to newbies. The use of screen-shots and examples to illustrate the instructions made it easy to fix any mistakes. He even recommended programs, videos, and other sites to use or for further reading and viewing.

Product: 1450588301 I’m working in a job where I use Red Hat Linux and FreeBSD daily. While I only have a few years of experience with Linux, there is many times where I need some details or forget a certain command. Many of the books I keep at my desk are the typical, 600+ page manual guides that offer commands with details such as when you would use it. The problem I found with these books is the overall length and extended amount of information.

Product: 0764579371 Rambles a bit and the material is dated as well. Also it covers five or six different Linux floavors but none in depth. Would have been better if it had been more narrow with better depth. Rating: 3 0764579371 Count: 6

Product: 0596002874 Tomorrow I’m going to drive into town and finalize my drop. I’m dropping out of college, getting a job at a warehouse, and teaching myself how to program. I’ve been buying, borrowing, stealing, and checking out all the books I can on software design. I’m getting books from the most utilitarian (How to Write Visual C++ for Windows) to the most abstract (Human Interface by Jef Raskin). I checked this book out from the university library before I had decided one hundred percent to drop.

Product: 0596000715 Great Starter book! Was up and running in Linux in no time. Found the book clear and informative, and screenshots were quite nice to have been included. Once you whip through this book, you’ll want a more indepth book quickly. However, great book to start you down the path of revolution. Rating: 5 0596000715 Count: 12

Product: Running Linux I found this book to be really good. I Like the fact that it doesn’t focus on anyone distribution, though points out when certain distributions use different commands or techniques to get the job done. Another great Linux book from O’reilly! Rating: 5 156592469X Count: 20

Product: 0201308215 The Linux operating system provides a sophisticated framework for running programs. Within its sturdy covers, Linux Application Development by Michael K. Johnson and Erik W. Troan provides much of what intermediate to advanced programmers need to know to take advantage of that framework. The book is divided into four major parts: Getting Started, Development Tools and Environment, System Programming and Development Libraries. Part 1 - Getting Started, is a very high-level overview of Linux itself.

Product: 1590594444 Hardening Linux by James Turnbull, stands out in my mind as a vitally important text that clearly lays out how to make your Linux boxes as secure as possible. Mr. Turnbull has done a remarkable job in delineating the potential vulnerabilities, and how to mitigate them. Each chapter covers a particular focus area in depth, with carefully worded and easy-to-follow examples. In the cases where you need to install some other piece of software to provide the extra security, he gives you the step-by-step details, leaving nothing for misinterpretation.
