Product: 159327257X Ubuntu is fast becoming very popular with Linux users. This book helps cut through all the jargon and painlessly (just like the title says) leads the reader through all of Ubuntu’s various features from the GNOME desktop, the Nautilus File Manager, the Linux terminal and command line, and OpenOffice just to name a few. But of course there’s so much more to Ubuntu and this book describes all of its features in wonderful detail, while at the same time describing concepts in a way that’s very comfortable and eases any concerns someone

Product: 0596100272 You cannot beat this book for the money. But actually, you cannot beat it at all. Although essentially the same content is freely available in the Bash ‘man’ page on Linux, I find the organization and presentation in this ‘pocket reference’ much more approachable. Not to mention the significant convenience of having it printed and bound for you in a size that literally fits in your pocket, if you choose to keep it there.

Product: How Linux Works Let’s face it, if you are mostly a casual computer user doing email and surfing the web, then what operating system you are using is going to matter very little. Linux desktop, MS Windows, Max OS X, and Android are all going to do those tasks pretty much in the same way, and you may not really care about what’s under the hood. You can go years using Linux and never see the command line.

Product: 0596002726 I consider the Fourth Edition one of the best Linux books available. O’Reilly managed to keep it down to 672 pages. Aside from updating those pages, the new edition has another 300 pages of excellent material. That’s how much increased capability Linux has acquired over a two and a half year period. When I heard the rumors that Adam Oram had started pulling the team together for the latest edition, I wondered about that.

Product: 0596003439 Power UNIX and Linux users will want to expand their skills. It’s inevitable. Some will get frustrated and drop out and some will work their way through it. For those who commit to make the transition from power user to system admin, then you will like this book. I don’t believe this is the only book a system admin will read or need. But, this is the one you’ll go back to over and over.

Product: 1430219300 I buy a lot of books on Amazon and most I don’t review because I don’t have the time. But this particular book is outstanding. I have been using Unix and Linux for a long time and this book–in a humorous fashion–explained to me why things are they way they are and why. The author speaks the Queen’s English very well and has a very dry sense of humor that he tosses in variously.

Product: 0143145088 The author argues that intrinsic motivation is superior to extrinsic motivation. Except for simple, algorthmic tasks, when the manager should apologize for the situation and provide a random award! This book doesn’t adequately summarize the professional works of groups highly interested in motivation: psychologists, organizational developers, HR practitioners, industrial engineers, process engineers, managers or managerial accountants. The author clearly prefers theory Y to theory X and the appendix of recomended books reinforces this worldview.

Product: 1680451839 Linux is off-putting to most of us who have grown up with a GUI like Windows and are comfortable with Windows. SO using LInux scares many of us off from using it for our projects, even maker projects. Linux is actually a good op sys for maker projects, but with so many of us not being familiar with LInux, we need an easy guide to get us started.
