Product: 0130084662 The Linux Administration Handbook by Evi Nemeth is a very in depth look at the subject, from the ground up, so to speak. They cover right from the start, and do point out a few distributions, and things like that. The only problem I can see is that you probably will want this to be longer! Product: 0130158070 Linux System Security: The Administrator’s Guide to Open Source Security Tools, Second Edition by Scott Mann has advice on starting from scratch when you are setting up a machine to make it secure from attack from the outside. It looks at everything from the filesystem upwards, and will give you a good starting point for looking at this. Rating: 3 0130158070 Count: 5

Product: 0596006284 This book lists commands and what they do. It does not explain Linux, or how to do things, just what various commands are. It’s not a bad reference, although you can get more from Linux man. Rating: 4 0596006284 Count: 21

Product: 1593271441 This book is very ambitious and succeeds in most aspects. The author’s a little ambitious about trying to take the reader from zero experience with programming to understanding assembly language within 100 pages, so if you’re starting from scratch I’d recommend combining this book with perhaps Dunetmann’s introduction to assembly on the x86: the two books actually complement each other very nicely. Once you’ve survived the first 150 pages you’ll have an excellent grounding in the mechanics underlying architecture attacks such as buffer overflow.

Product: 1932394508 Has chapters on using it as an AWK replacement and as a SED replacement. I have started using PERL as a safe cross-platform replacement for those tools, since their behavior differs between Mac OS X and Linux. But PERL is the same in both those environments. Product: 1430219998 Really great introduction to Ubuntu Linux. My only issues are that it is outdated with the latest version. It also lacks in discussing shell commands. Overall, it is a great introduction, and worthwhile, but search for a current edition, matching the latest version of Ubuntu Linux, the latest LTS version (Long Term Support – very stable version). Cheers! Rating: 4 1430219998 Count: 9

Product: 0131478230 Totally unlike most Linux books, it avoids discussing everything via GUI and jumps right into making the power of the command line your friend. Rating: 5 0131478230 Count: 46

Product: 013254248X I like this book. I’m on my second trip though. This is a great place to start learning to use Linux. I’ve read a lot of IT books, and this is one of the few not including numerous mistakes. I wish all technology books were so thorough, well written, and thoughtfully organized.
