Product: 0131367366 Before I read this book, I had nil knowledge of Linux and only knew how to install the RedHat distribution of Linux (easy). Not a foreigner to OS (certified in NT), I knew I had to get over the initial learn curve. Using this book, I was able to learn the basics and I got everything running (dialin to ISP, upgrade packages…) and it opened up a new world to me.

Product: 1449344216 This O’Reilly book comes from the same folks who produce Make magazine, which has lots of fun and informative projects for folks who want to dabble with devices of all sorts. From the first chapter (only 17 pages), it provides warnings to save your from frying your Pi, breaking the board, and offers suggestions to build a durable assembly. I love the drawing, they’re detailed and well labelled. If you have the parts needed to get the Raspberry Pi going (including USB power supply, HDMI cable, powered USB hub, and an SD card with an image of the operating system) then you should have a running system by the end of that chapter.

Product: 1517392772 I have a acer1 netbook that runs with Linux. I’m actually a programmer but haven’t really handled Linux, that’s why I’m totally lost with troubleshooting my netbook and I really thought it’ll be great to have a bit of a background too. Reading this book gave me an overview about Linux. I guess, it’s like a OSX too because it doesn’t really require an anti-virus software. Plus it is also a freeware, but as I am encountering right now, if you don’t know how to handle basic commands, then Linux will leave you scratching your head.

Product: 1849695105 The author spends more time that I think is necessary on customizing the shell. Once he gets to the meat however, this is actually a decent introduction to some of the tools available in Kali/Backtrack as well as surrounding Linux tools. Rating: 3 1849695105 Count: 9

Product: The Linux Programming Interface: A Linux and UNIX System Programming Handbook This book has been really helpful improving my software! If you are a Linux or UNIX programmer, you should get this book. Do you know a Linux or UNIX programmer and want to give him (her? ;-)) a gift? Get this book. I thought it was a stack of manpages, which would already have been great, but this book is the true successor to the historic Stevens works on UNIX.

Product: 0131861506 This certainly isn’t a hand holding introduction to Linux by any means (jump in at the deep end, it works!). However if you’re looking for a down to earth, practical guide to a variety of everyday tasks involved in running Linux in a server environment you’ll find this book very useful. The subject matter covered is useful, and the explanations are sufficient with plenty of useful examples. Certainly a good introduction although obviously for the finer points of configuration more specialised sources will need to be consulted.
