Product: Linux Bible You’re better off getting the Unix and Linux System Administration handbook. The only thing this offers is some good detail on SELinux. The paper is so cheap the wind will rip easily with a strong gust of wind. Rating: 3 0470230193 Count: 52

Product: UNIX and Linux System Administration Handbook Excellent resource. I’ve been working as a Jr Linux Engineer for the past 5 months. I bought this book 3 months ago but have not read much of it until today. Simply cannot put this book down!!! This book was recommended to me and now I see why. Great for any new system administrators – no matter how well you think you know Linux already!

Product: 0380815931 It’s an interesting read, if for no other reason than to get perspective from someone with more Linux history than yourself, but I’m not sure I subscribe to a number of his causation assertions. Rating: 3 0380815931 Count: 32

Product: 1783982144 Chapter 1: Getting Started Good detailed coverage of setting up VMWare Player (Windows) or VMWare Fusion (Mac OS X). I would have seen the author at least cover VirtualBox as it works on Windows, OS X and Linux. The discussion on having vulnerable targets to work with covers Metasploitable which is an excellent choice. I am glad the point was stressed to not expose a Metasploitable system to any untrusted network.

Product: 1597495867 First let me start off by saying that the Amazon packaging was terrible and likely the reason the book looked ‘used’ instead of new when I received it. In order to get better packaging you might want to order this book with other books. —– The author does not make the assumption that everyone reading the book will be familiar with what Open Source Software is and goes in to a little bit of detail on the subject.

Product: 1849695105 The book begins out with a section dedicated to general Linux commands. It will make it easy for non-Linux users to work with Linux. It was not as useful for experienced Linux users, but the section on customizing your bash prompt and bash history is useful for both beginners and experienced Linux users. The crash course on regular expressions was excellent as well and is a skill anyone using Linux can make great use of.

Product: Linux Bible This is a good book for beginners. Downside: It focuses on commands used for Fedora and RedHat Linux. This is disappointing because Ubuntu is the most popular flavor of Linux now. The authors should address this gap, but they don’t. Upside, the language is clear and they remind you how to continue to configure the system from earlier chapters if you’ve followed previous examples. Rating: 4 0470230193 Count: 52

Product: 013254248X After buying four 800 page Ubuntu books, I finally found Mark Sobell’s ‘A Practical Guide to Ubuntu Linux’. It is the best book on the market to learn Ubuntu with. The author helps you to understand how the processes work while giving you clear commands to control them. This is a great combination to learn and practice with. The other books I purchased before this one were complex (sometimes wrong) and read like dictionaries that didn’t offer insight or flow.

Product: 0596002726 I wanted to see a little more of the book than just the first chapter that you get with most samples, which generally ends up being the why I wrote this book and how to use it and never has any pictures. I was particularly interested in skimming the chapter I am most concerned with rigiht now. So I searched the inventories of my local brick and mortar bookstores and it seems to have disappeared from the shelves which leads me to surmise that a new edition is imminent.

Product: 1518635504 This book has transformed the way I worked on Linux command line. This book explains both theoretical and practical aspects of Linux. It also covers all the typical system administration tasks. This is a perfect companion when you are dealing with multiple flavors of Linux. Rating: 4 1518635504 Count: 5
