Product: 013254248X Got this for a college class. It does an excellent job of bringing the Windows user (kicking and screaming, I must say) into the Linux world. Good writing breaks down some difficult concepts into digestible chunks. It will be a valuable reference long after the class is over. Rating: 5 013254248X Count: 8

Product: The Linux Command Line: A Complete Introduction I have bought several books in an effort to learn Linux from an administrator perspective, or at least from a power user perspective. This is the best book I have found to explain things in a way that, as a person new to Linux, I could understand reasonably well. I do not use the command line in Windows, but I have found it difficult to perform in Linux even the types of configurations that I can do rather easily in the Windows Control Panel.

Product: 0131488724 A good book for those of us who are new to Linux by way of SimplyMepis. The author chose to approach this one, not so much as a step-by-step guide, but more like a general parts manual that summarizes what you get when you install SimplyMepis, or run it as a Live CD. I was a little disappointed with the relative lack of general purpose information about the Linux operating system itself, basic stuff like an acronym glossary, for example.

Product: LINUX: The Ultimate Beginner’s Guide! We all know that when it comes to security and stability, Linux is the best. It is created by techies, for the techies! However, everyone can download it for free and use it as it is a nice system to work with if you have sensistive files and do not want to lose your work due to a trojan or a virus. This book is ideal for beginners who have absolutely no idea about Linux and it explains all the little concepts in a very friendly way.

Product: LINUX: The Ultimate Beginner’s Guide! I have a background in Windows with many years spent as a systems administrator for a large company. I am fully aware of the vulnerabilities that the Windows operating system can have and have been interested in the stable environment of the Linux operating system but have never had the time to learn and could never find a book that could convey the Linux principles in a way that is quick and easy to learn.

Product: 1597494860 WARNING: Don’t read this book if you would prefer to remain blissfully ignorant of just how vulnerable computer operating systems are to compromise. This book is an intriguing read for anyone interested in how kernel exploits can be created and why they are such a problem. It took me a long time to get through this book due to its very technical nature – not that I mind, but it did feel more like a college homework assignment than a recreational read.

Product: 0596002130 Despite its size, this book has various defects. First of all, while it covers the memory systems with a great amount of detail, the file system and the description of the actual kernel are vague. Second, the index and table of contents make it quite difficult to find your way around the book. As a rule of thumb, an index should have two entries per page of text. This book falls way short of that.

Product: 059600754X Everything works better than I expected. I found out Linux doesn’t use WinModems and Test Driving will save your configuration info to a USB device. Rating: 5 059600754X Count: 9

Product: 0321636783 My current PC is a great machine, built it myself four years ago and it is still going strong. However, it runs XP windows which is now beginning to create all kinds of problems. For example, can’t upgrade to the latest Explorer, and so I have been using Mozilla and Chrome more often, which is not a bad thing. Recently ordered Ubuntu 14 and have played with it a bit.
