Product: LINUX Beginner’s Crash Cours This book is very poorly written and contains many grammatical and factual errors. I bought this book because I consider myself a novice with Linux, but this book contained nothing useful that could help me to learn Linux or use Linux. This book went straight to the freebox of the local thrift store, although I am still using Linux. Rating: 2 1518721354 Count: 19

Product: 111846446X This book has a message beyond introducing you to the Pi. Eben Upton, co-creator of the Raspberry Pi, and one of the author’s of the book, takes you through the history of development and the ideological motivation for developing the Pi. Succinctly to paraphrase his argument in the foreword: Kids don’t actually know much about technology because they cannot program; GUI is as far as they get and that isn’t getting very far.

Product: 1590596749 This is a well-written, well-organized guide to SUSE Linux. However, I feel like it provides very little that a book on Linux in general (as opposed to SUSE, specifically) wouldn’t, and I think that a generalized Linux book would be, on the whole, better because it would give a bigger picture and make the reader more comfortable in any Linux environment. That being said, most of the content of this book IS generally applicable to most Linux flavors, so it hardly matters anyway.

Product: 0470411546 I ordered this book knowing that it might not cover my model of Asus netbook. It is chock full of info of older models but some will be good for my newer model. It seems rthe writer like to spend way too much time on Linux models. I don’t know if newer models have that option because mine is Windows 7 starter. Either way, if you have an older model, it will be more helpful.

Product: 0201308215 Johnson and Troan is a great book for Linux programmers. It covers in good detail a wide range of topics in system programming, including process management, file and directory structures, linux development tools, signals, and terminal programming. Network programming is lightly covered, but network programming is a very large topic and is covered well in other books. Threads are also not covered, but again, threaded programming is a complex topic and is covered elsewhere.

Product: 0596007876 This book is partly Knoppix specific hacks, partly more generic Linux tips, however the real value are the tips showing how Knoppix can be used as a tool. The Knoppix-specific hacks are useful but only valuable if you use Knoppix all the time, which is not as crazy an idea as it sounds if you look at some of the hacks listed. Don’t discount these tips though, many of them are necessary for the later ones.

Product: 0596527209 Not surprisingly, this is another lovely addition to the successful ‘Hacks’ series. Like the others, ‘Ubuntu Hacks’ consists of a series of pointers on how to perform useful and usually non-trivial tasks ranging from beginner level through to expert. As you would expect novice users can get more from the book than experienced users, but there is still likely to be plenty to interest people of any skill level.
