Product: 0596001835 Recently I’ve been designing a system to run atop 802.11b radios and this book has served as an excellent introduction to the 802.11b standard. For example, Gast’s description of spread-spectrum radios, chipping, and OFDMA radio systems is a broad overview without going into excessive mathematical formulas and it gives a non-RF engineer a basic understanding of what are the issues underlying each of the 802.11 radios of today.

Product: Wikinomics: How Mass Collaboration Changes Everything Think of this book more as reporting of where the world was in 2005 than analysis and direction for the future. But Wikinomics is a helpful resource to have, for most people are unaware of the extent to which self-organization through mass communication is being developed. Some of the successes are spectacular like the Goldcorp contest to locate more gold (which I described in The Ultimate Competitive Advantage in 2003) and Procter & Gamble’s astonishing efforts to acquire technology from outside the organization (which I describe in The 2,000 Percent Squared Solution).

Product: 1517392772 I haven’t finished it yet, but so far this book is a good introduction to the command line environment. The examples given are very simple, clear and consistent throughout the book. The language is clear and easy to understand. My only criticism is that the book seems to be geared toward network administrators needing to learn Linux, but then again it’s probably a small minority of people like me that just want to learn it because I ultimately want to free myself from the confines of proprietary operating systems… Rating: 4 1517392772 Count: 39

Product: 013254248X Clear, well written, useful for all levels of Linux experience. Evidently used as a text for two of the Linux exams as well. Covers the same topics in Linux that were covered in my Windows 7 desktop and Server 2008 training. Rating: 5 013254248X Count: 8

Product: 1517392772 Learning about Linux is useful as my brother informed me, especially in the type of work that we have. I think this book is the perfect book for people like me. Before diving in to reading more about Linux, I want to get a brief overview of it and I think this book does the job. The book introduces Linux including its history. Then, there were also discussions and tutorials that newbies will find useful.

Product: 0596002564 Network administers will invariably face the task of integrating Windows systems with Unix or Linux ones. Samba provides an excellent solution to this problem, but for people starting out, Samba seems like a daunting task. Not so with this book. Prior to reading this book, I had no experience with Samba whatsoever. Before long, I found myself setting up Samba on a linux server and setting up file shares to Win2k systems.

Product: Running Linux This is the first book I had ever read about Linux, and it is still the best. I found it to be most useful in explaining simple things that other linux books (and webpages) overlook. It also explains things rather clearly, and provides a nice intro to just about everything a beginner needs to know. If you are somewhat familiar with Linux, you might still find a few things you didn’t know before, though I’d recommend reading another book.

Product: Linux (Hacking Exposed) Given the complexity of Linux systems, and the years spent hardening such systems against would-be intruders, it is amazing how a simple, clever idea can still translate into a full-blown security exploit. I really enjoyed the format of the book. The authors don’t waste time on security theories, or explaining what Linux is. They know the reader is already familiar with these, and wants to know, in concrete terms, how a hacker sees your server, and will systematically breach its security until they get root access.
