Product: Linux for Beginners: An Introduction to the Linux Operating System and Command Line I’m a casual linux user as I have a DLink DNS-323 that has a basic linux distro on it. Since I don’t use it all that often, I’ve barely scratched the surface of linux. The DNS uses only a command-line, but I like the fact that this book also includes some information about some of the GUI options.

Product: 0596004826 Unless you are a seasoned Linux guru who never forgets anything, then you should buy Linux in a Nutshell. This is quite possibly one of the most essential books for anyone working with Linux. If you are like me, reading documentation online can be tedious and having a handy reference volume is better than stumbling through Google search results. Linux in a Nutshell covers major user, programming, administration and networking tools for popular Linux distributions.

Product: Intrusion Prevention and Active Response Intrusion Prevention and Active Response (IPAR) is a welcome departure from many books covering intrusion prevention and detection. The authors clearly distinguish between intrusion detection systems (IDS) and intrusion prevention systems (IPS), a distinction often conflated in media, training manuals and other educational material. The level of presentation is well suited for someone familiar with security principles, techniques and methods. If you are new to Linux, then you will probably need supporting materials to get through the more complex chapters.

Product: 1430219122 Turnbull, Lieverdink & Matotek should do a public service to PRO Linux Administrators and possibly drop the Pro from their Pro Linux System Administration book. For once I totally agree with all the other reviewers (never mind there are only two) of this book in the fact that this is NOT an advanced server title. That is about the only serious complaint I have since accidentally enough since I am not anywhere close to being a seasonal Linux user, much less a PRO.

Product: 0470888458 I bought this book on Amazon when it came out a few months ago. I have the older Linux+ book (for the previous version of the Linux+ exam) but that version of CompTIA Linux+ is ending as of Oct 31 2010 (it consisted of a single 90 question exam - equiv of 6 months of Linux experience). So I was undecided on what exactly I should do: A.) Push it and take the existing test before Oct 31 2010 or B.

Product: Linux Bible This is just a fantastic Linux reference. It’s a great comprehensive resource for people getting started out with Linux. Early chapters help you set up a desktop environment, then you are walked through some important command-line stuff. Later chapters go into things like security and cloud computing. What I like the most is that book is organized into short, highly directive tutorials. One of the things encyclopedic-sized manuals like these suffer from often is that they act as good references, but you can’t learn from them.

Product: Linux All-in-One For Dummies April 2014 comes, Ms no longer supports XP; what to do? My plan is to shrink MS on my harddrive and add Linux. I already have the office version (Open Office) and it works well. This book tells me how to do everything and provides resources should there be problems early on. Gives me choices of which Linux distribution I want and choices for the desktop.
