Product: LINUX Beginner’s Crash Cours I wanted to try something other than Microsoft. My friend recommended Linux, but Im very familiar with it. I was introduced to Linux through this book, it is explains all the command system and its function, running the system, troubleshooting and many more. If you are like me that has no idea what is Linux all about, by reading this book you will learn the basics and how it works.

Product: 151182607X As a newbie to Linux, this is a very valuable resource. The beginning of the book was pretty interesting with some of the history and growth of this platform and then moving in to the usable information. Everything was laid out in such a way that made sense and was easy to read. I would recommend to anyone looking to learn more about Linux and even more to those looking to begin using it.

Product: 1592007287 This book was very informative but there were too many references to Red Hat. A book like this, I feel, should be well rounded and give examples of other distro’s as well. I used this book in a study group with very knowledgeable people and many years of experience. At times it would be mentioned that they learned some new things from the reading material which surprised me! All in all, it’s a good book to get started in the Linux realm and you won’t be disappointed.

Product: 1118531744 1st: Thankfully, I did not purchase this book. It was instead provided for me in my Linux+ course. The instructor didn’t like this book either. The book is very complicated and uneasy on the eyes. I do not recommend this book or it’s cunningly disguised duplicate: LPIC-1: Linux Professional Institute Certification Study Guide: (Exams 101 and 102), both by the same author. No, I recommend you save your money and purchase the book that I did: The Linux Command Line: A Complete Introduction

Product: 0764579010 I do find it odd that in this day and age we are still talking about introductory assembler. But that being said, if you need it you need it, and this is a great place to to get an introduction to the x86 instruction set on the latest processors. Connections with Linux are also demonstrated. Graphics and illustrations are well used but not overused. The text is well written and engaging.

Product: 0201308215 This is a well written introduction to C development on Linux starting with the very basics of process and file I/O, going all the way through networking, regular expressions and lightweight databases. The first few chapters go over the differences between Linux and unix. Then cover development tool basics. This is a high end reference that is light on screenshots (almost none), that has well written and annotated example code.

Product: 0131470248 I can’t fault this book for how big it is. I usually find super huge tomes to be of inconsistent quality across the chapters, but this book has consistently high quality organization, text and use of graphics across all of the chapters. As you would expect the book starts with installation, it then covers use of the operating system from the desktop level. After that it goes into the file system using the shell, and ends up with the with shell programming.

Product: 0131861506 I wasn’t expecting to like this book, but I was pleasantly surprised. The book presents small solutions for the kind of Linux problems that you find the answer to one week and promptly forget the next. This makes it ideal for end users like me who just need the occasional helping hand. I’m downplaying the value of the book though. The explanations are given thorough coverage to teach you the why as much as the how.

Product: 1590594584 This book covers the end user portions of SUSE. Installation, basics shell use, and primarily use of the operating system through the graphical user interface. The writing is good. But given the size of the book I think more could have been written about the fundamentals of the operating system, and in particular the use of the shell. The author just breezes over the use of Bash. A lot more could have been said there.
