Product: 0596004826 This is a great reference book. In my opinion, THE Linux desktop reference. It is well written, concise, clear and complete. If your budget is limited to one Linux reference, this is the one. Rating: 5 0596004826 Count: 13

Product: 0071545883 Steve Shah clearly presents Linux concepts and common administrative tasks in a straight forward manner. For those of us more accustomed to the MS Windows world, he frequently compares the way Linux works to Windows 2000. A must have for MCSEs living in a heterogeneous network environment! Product: 0596002726 I love this book; I recommend it to people at least twice a day when I visit […]. This book covers every aspect of installing and booting a GNU/Linux operating system, from choosing a distribution, to running specific pieces of software. It includes tangible and detailed, though introductory, material on hardware, networking, software installation, using Emacs and Vi, desktop environments, security, and package management. Many of the topics, such as Samba and networking, focus on making your GNU/Linux installation part of a wider network with a variety of operating systems.

Product: 0131478230 This is a pretty good book for instruction in Linux command line code. I didn’t know anything about command line code before I started reading. It’s pretty easy to understand the material in the way it’s given. It’s one of those books you just can’t put down. Thanks. John Rating: 4 0131478230 Count: 46

Product: 0131478230 This book is the best introduction to linux/unix-based systems I have seen. The book is good even for experienced users. Many of the topics will have details useful to experienced users and novices. Note that despite the title, the book covers to an extent non-Linux systems. It often will say how MacOS differs from Linux or from BSD. For example, in the section on home directories it mentions that the home directory on Linux is usually /home, but on MacOS it is /Users.

Product: 0672327201 It’s surprising how helpful this book is, considering how little material is actually inside. You need several other books, in order to get started properly (Linux Device Drivers; Understanding the Linux Kernel; and Linux Kernel Architecture, mainly). However, this is still worth owning, primarily because the subject has so much depth that a clear, high-level description of what’s going on is invaluable. And that’s what Robert Love provides. Product: 159327288X This is a good introductory guide to penetration and security testing with Metasploit, Fast-Track, and SET. You need to know Linux, and it would be helpful to know some programming, at least Python and Ruby. This is more of a how to do it kind of book, for people who learn by actually working with the software. This is more important here, because the software isn’t intuitive. Chapter 1 is a very useful overview.

Product: The Linux Programming Interface: A Linux and UNIX System Programming Handbook I received a copy of this from the publisher, and boy am I glad I did. It’s a wonderful book that’s an absolute keeper. I’ve done quite a bit of systems level programming with POSIX systems and Linux and I wish that I’d had this book earlier primarily because its descriptions of systems-level programming on Linux are incredibly clear and detailed.
