Product: 1499222033 Perhaps this was written more with Unix as a reference instead of Gnu/Linux. I’ll admit I didn’t read any foreword or preface that may have been in the book…I dove right into the meat of the book. The vast majority of the shortcuts work very well, and I was excited to learn them. Some things that use regular expressions don’t work quite right, but I’ve noticed that to be the case even relative to the grep manual provided by my operating system.

Product: 0132757273 I’m not going to call this book terrible, but it’s not great. I’m taking a Linux class (which itself is not great either) and this book isn’t really that helpful - half the time when I go to look something up, it’s not on the page the index says or it’s really vague about the topic. I also have a silly minor complaint about the way the CD was attached in the book - I don’t like taking the cardboard sleeves out since you risk damaging the book spine sometimes, but leaving it in makes it really hard to turn the pages near the index since it’s position makes them all flop together.

Product: 0131861506 I’m a big fan of the cookbook approach to tech books. I usually don’t have time to read a book to get a broad and general understanding of a topic. I’m usually after what this book promises: a quick fix. I want answers to discrete problems. That’s what Linux® Quick Fix Notebook delivers. When I did have time to read an entire chapter, I learned a lot. When I flipped to random pages, there was a good chance I learned something.

Product: 0672336936 Matthew Helmke does a great job covering all the bases for newer Ubuntu users (introduces the desktop interfaces as well as the command line) to the new features for the more advanced Ubuntu users (virtualization, OpenStack, Juju, etc). This book even covers some of the new capabilities for supporting touch/mobile platforms. If you want to learn more about Mir, the replacement for X, this book does not cover that.

Product: Linux for Beginners: An Introduction to the Linux Operating System and Command Line This book is a good read. It is a wonderful first step towards leaning Linux for every beginner. Jason’s skills as a teacher are excellent. I have also watched some of his online classes and this book just confirms how superb he is. I have already recommended it to co-worker of mine and i hope that she will find it as helpful as i did.

Product: 1590596277 Author spends too much time on the history of Linux. His writing style is both pedantic and stilted. He tries to cover too much information in one book and, in my opinion, doesn’t cover any of it in an easy to read style. Rating: 2 1590596277 Count: 15
