Product: 0596006438 O’Reilly’s Hacks series have been hit or miss; mostly hits, and this second edition is no exception. Lockhart and friends bring together a set of tips and tricks in the classic O’Reilly form, and cover a scattershot of topics that people like to know. There’s over 100 hacks here, and I can’t possibly cover them all. I’ll pick and choose topics to illustrate why I think this book is a success.

Product: 1491939982 I’m a relatively new Mac user, having gotten my first one in the Fall of 2015. I’m enjoying it, and was surprised to find the terminal in there. I know a little about Linux server administration from the websites I run. So I was surprised that some of my knowledge from there transferred here pretty easily. Went looking for a book which taught me more about the terminal, and I was pleased to find this.

Product: The Linux Command Line: A Complete Introduction This book is recommended by the Linux Foundation (the group that employs Linus Torvalds) in the LFS101 Intro to Linux course materials as a helpful and accurate introduction to the Linux command line and as a reference. Having looked it over, I definitely agree. Rating: 5 1593273894 Count: 86

Product: 0764543733 I just finished this book after about 4 months of off and on reading and working (most of) the examples. I’ve already been able to put the knowledge I gained from it to work at my job at Travelocity.com - my biggest frustration was that I had to wait until I came home to continue reading it. This book will play a prominent part in my work bookshelf.

Product: 0596009658 The title sort of implies that this is a beginner’s book, but the contents stray away from beginner territory very quickly. You’re assumed to have a pretty good understanding of what a shell is and what it’s for; if you’re on Mac or Linux, for instance, you won’t find any explanations in here on how to find your terminal and start up a Bash shell; the authors assume you know what Bash is and how to find it on your computer.

Product: 1449339530 Explains low-level system programming in a Linux environment. Very thorough, in fact sometimes reads more like the man page than something which is supposed to be tutorial in nature. Rating: 4 1449339530 Count: 6

Product: 1449344216 I purchased and read the Kindle version of this book and was extremely pleased with it. As others have noted, Richardson’s clear and concise delivery of what can be complicated subject matter make this book an indispensable entry point for new Pi users. As a software developer who has worked in the Linux environment for more than a decade, I was largely familiar with much of the material. Regardless, I was introduced to some very useful features of the Linux OS that I was not previously aware of.

Product: 1597494860 After reading this you won’t be able to go right out and compromise an operating system kernel (or know how to protect one). You will however have a decent understanding of the sorts of weaknesses present in an operating system kernel, an appreciation of what it takes to compromise or secure them, and know the steps involved. Using this book to guide your study and practice, you should be able to hone your skills well.
