Product: Linux for Beginners: An Introduction to the Linux Operating System and Command Line Terrible. No orientation at all. Doesn’t tell you up front even what Linux is, why it is better, whether you can run windows programs on it, what programs are available for it, why to switch, anything orientational at all. Language is also confusing. For example, the different versions of the Linux operating systems are called different distributions.

Product: 0470497025 I’ve had this book for a few months now. It’s extremely good for those just starting out with programming or for those that have dabbled in other languages but never with real x86 assembly. Thankfully this book guides you through programming in Linux which uses the protected flat memory model (explained in the book) which is VASTLY better than the old MSDOS model of programming. It will take you from inside basics, through requisite base conversions and such.

Product: Running Linux I got this book to brush my skills on Linux and install Linux in my laptop as well, to make ti a dual boot os. I did not want to bifurcate my computer’s memory and hence did not finally do it, but thanks for the book. Rating: 5 156592469X Count: 20

Product: 1932394508 This is an excellent work in how to harness PERL to better use the Linux/ Unix shell and command line. But a warning: this is NOT a good introduction to either the PERL scripting language or shell programming. Rather you need to be familiar with both first before you approach this book, specifically, you need to be familiar with sed, awk, and grep, and you really need to be already familiar with PERL.

Product: How Linux Works I found the book reads very clear. It gives brief background on moving around and using the commandline then moves on to topics that can be diffcult for newer linux users (compiling your own kernal anyone?) but does a good job of bringing the reader along. The chapters on comipling programs were excellent and very helpful. The book does a great job of explaining Iptables in only 5 pages.

Product: 0072127481 The author does a really nice job talking about network hacks. He sounds like he still hacks into networks on the side since the book contains so much information. The book is not exhaustive (no book can be about this subject) but covers the most important topics about hacking and security. If you want a good introduction with some depth to it this is the book. It’s good book to start with if you haven’t read anything else.
