Product: Ubuntu Made Easy I’ve been a DOS user since the first IBM PC came out, and a Windows user since version 3.1. I’ve used Linux on our business servers, but mainly through the cPanel admin interface, which hides most of the ugly details of the operating system. I’ve installed a couple of Linux distributions on Windows system under Virtual Box, but only enough to see what they look like. So I’m still pretty much a novice at navigating Linux.

Product: Linux for Beginners: An Introduction to the Linux Operating System and Command Line I’ve ben using Linux since the late 90s, I bought this book to teach my 8 year old the basics of Linux. It was great! I can use Linux but I’m I’m not a good teacher. It was well put together and probably one of the best Linux books I’ve seen for a long time. I’m going now to see what else he’s written!

Product: 1590595874 Do you want a free-as-in-speech bitmap image editor? Do you use the GIMP? Have you tried, but been put off by the available documentation? Have you been frustrated by the GIMP’s complex and arguably idiosyncratic interface? I’ve used (and mis-used) the GIMP since the version 0.9x days, so I think I have gained some perspective from doing things the hard way without a net. Ms. Peck has done us all a favor.

Product: 1499222033 Having used Linux (Ubuntu, primarily) as my main OS for over a decade, I’m very familiar with the use of the command line. However, as the OS has matured there has been less need to keep command line skills sharp. That being said, this is a reasonably good reference for command line tricks. Not the best I’ve seen, but has been handy on occasion. Rating: 3 1499222033 Count: 7

Product: 1118554213 I have never have used a Dummies book that I didn’t like. This one is right on for you if you’re familiar with Windows but have no exposure to Linux. It is well organized and very readable. Rating: 5 1118554213 Count: 9

Product: 0132757273 …It just so happens that I have been working lately at readying my work infrastructure for the additional release of RHEL 7. This book helps to take a lot of pain out of that new release by going over what I believe are the important changes / additions a person really should know. Like Sobells other books, he takes great pains to guide you through a variety of topics that generally amount to a good basic understanding of the operating system.

Product: 1849695105 Ill have to say that, for some reason, I thought this book was going to be some kind of guide to using only bash itself to do penetration testing. Its not that at all. Its really more like doing penetration testing FROM the bash shell, or command line of you like. Your first 2 chapters take you through a solid amount of background bash shell information. You cover topics like directory manipulation, grep, find, understanding some regular expressions, all the sorts of things you will appreciate knowing if you are going to be spending some time at the command line, or at least a good topical smattering.

Product: 159327288X I’ve always been interested in penetration testing but oddly enough, I had never used metasploit. So a few weeks ago I bought this book and another one about Metasploit by Syngress. I started with the Syngress one, and it was OK but it was terribly outdated so I literally had to throw it away. This one from NoStarch is a completely different story. For starters, I did a background check on the authors.

Product: 0470082933 I’ve become a bigger and bigger fan of Ubuntu and Linux. This is a good resource for both but definitely not for the beginner. I found it helpful for administration and more so when I need help remembering how to use a command. Rating: 4 0470082933 Count: 18
