Product: 1593276036 I like Python. I like its internal consistency. I like its design that all but ensures there is one right way to write almost anything and that any good Python programmer can figure that way out and use it. I have reviewed several Python-focused books and expect to do so in the future. So, this review will not be about the language itself, but about how well the book covers the language and provides interesting use cases.

Product: 0321832043 Have you ever been responsible for a server and had something go wrong? Ever been in a situation where you didn’t know what was causing the problem or how to figure it out? I think any of us who develop code, work in quality assurance, or administer systems have had this sort of experience. Sometimes problems appear that were never covered in a class or training session. Experience is an amazing teacher, but gaining that experience can be intimidating and sometimes painful.

Product: How Linux Works This is the Second Edition of How Linux Works: What Every Superuser Should Know and is the only Linux-focused book I can recall that has a strong focus on the computer science, what is happening here and why, big picture instead of the how-tos. The reader does learn how to do things, but only after learning conceptually what is happening. This is something that is sorely lacking in today’s computer education classes and I am thrilled to see the author’s focus here.

Product: The Hack-Counter Hack Training Course With quite a bit of experience in networking and security, I bought this on something of a lark. just to see how it was done and what was presented. I would call it a security survey class. It assumes a certain base of knowledge with both Windows and Linux which is fine. The information when presented is clear enough but not quite enough detail for someone with good working knowledge already.

Product: 159327257X I enjoyed starting out in linux and this is the guide that helped me to do it. I realize now that the internet and some forum browsing is all that is necessary, but this is a good book for folks that prefer to have the printed word on paper. I think if could have been a bit more detailed on getting started, but once into the install process and how to customize ubuntu it was very helpful.

Product: RHCSA/RHCE Red Hat Linux Certification Study Guide This is one of the best books I have found on the subject. There are a lot of useful real world tips and tricks sprinkled throughout the book. It has come in handy lot at work. The author is fairly concise in presenting fairly difficult materials. I would recommend this book for any aspiring Linux administrators. Unfortunately it does not cover anything outside of the base packages included with the RHEL/CentOS distributions, but it is definitely a great starting point.

Product: Linux Device Drivers This book is becoming dated and it is showing sometimes. Some APIs no longer work or have changed but such is the nature of the Linux kernel and as a device driver developer you should be prepared to face this. Thankfully there hasn’t been any major change (such as removing of bottom halves) although there are things on the horizon that will have an impact on this books subject.

Product: 0470343435 Overall this book does have some irritating issues, but it is worthwhile text for programmers who are starting out with the Linux kernel. Even though Linux is a moving target, this book will save you some headaches and surfing message boards on the internet. Is it better than Love’s book? No probably not, but it is different.. This book provides some insight into coding and specific advice that will help you get past the Linux learning curve.

Product: 0071545883 This book was assigned for a course I took. It is perfect for both the new and slightly experienced Linux user. Why I say user? Because whether you are a user or admin in Linux there are things you should know about adminstration of Linux. The author does a great job providing a high level, and more important a lower level view of Linux. He gives you the commands every user should know, and how scripts work.
