This book is the best introduction to linux/unix-based systems I have seen. The book is good even for experienced users. Many of the topics will have details useful to experienced users and novices. Note that despite the title, the book covers to an extent non-Linux systems. It often will say how MacOS differs from Linux or from BSD. For example, in the section on home directories it mentions that the home directory on Linux is usually /home, but on MacOS it is /Users. The book is very good at walking through topics in an order that will be practical for a person new to unix.
