I’m working in a job where I use Red Hat Linux and FreeBSD daily. While I only have a few years of experience with Linux, there is many times where I need some details or forget a certain command. Many of the books I keep at my desk are the typical, 600+ page manual guides that offer commands with details such as when you would use it.

The problem I found with these books is the overall length and extended amount of information. I know what I’m looking for, and just need a short example of the command. If I need more, then I can read the man pages or search the Internet for more details. Then some of the shorter guides offer too little information or the method they sort the commands is difficult to follow.

This book is different. It’s clear enough to read quickly and get a quick understanding of the command. But also offers the commands in a grouping of common topics, so searching is much easier. This is especially helpful if you’re a newer user to Linux and not sure what commands are available.

The only downside, and this is more about Linux than really the book is the details which command is for the Linux distros/BSD/UNIX/etc. The issue is many Linux distributions have different commands, or slightly different methods of the same command. While this was defined in the book, a newer user to Linux might get confused and think there is a typo with the book. This is something common to general Linux documentation that is not specific to a certain distribution.
