The Hidden Flame, the second book in the Acts of Faith series, gives the reader an insight into the trials of the earliest Christians and how they were distrusted, persecuted and ridiculed at times. The story revolves around the beautiful Abigail, who works hard within her community of Christians, distributing food to the needy. She, at first, lives with her younger brother, Jacob, a boy conflicted between his belief in the Messiah and his desire to become a Roman legionnaire. Abigail is desired by two very different men - Ezra, an arrogant, Judean merchant and Linux, a Roman soldier. Can either win her heart when they do not share her faith?

The reader is transported in time back to Jerusalem with its mix of varied cultures and beliefs, many clashing with each other. Familiar characters from the Bible appear - Stephen, Peter, James, Saul, and others, all giving life to the struggle of the early followers of Jesus against the ways of Rome.

I did not read the first book in the series before this one, but it was no problem at all to immerse myself into the story. Oke and Bunn have delivered a touching and captivating story with a Biblical base.
