The book is pretty short but it has a nice preface from the author about how he came up with the Raspberry Pi and brought it to reality.

The Pi runs Linux, so if you’re not familiar with the OS, this book will not make you proficient. However, since all Pi are the same hardware, the preconfigured images work and the book will show you how to set that up along with a little introduction to Linux.

This book probably should come with the Pi, but since it costs about 50% of the Pi’s cost, it’s been left out to keep the device cost low.
