Product: RHCSA/RHCE Red Hat Linux Certification Study Guide

Having read (and reviewed) the previous edition of this book, I can say that this book (the Sixth edition) delivers on the strong points as well as its predecessor. The book is organized in such a way to mirror the exams, which means the organization has changed from the previous edition.

While I admit that I have no intention of taking the exams at this moment, I still find this book to be quite useful. It has helped me file the rough points in my own abilities as a long-time Red Hat user. For example, from this particular edition I attempted to gain a better understanding of one point I found frustrating, SELinux. I found that in reading the section on SELinux I was able to better understand the context in which other SELinux documents were written, and I can now use SELinux on my system rather than disable and ignore it as I have before.

For all of the other sections, this book makes for a great refresher for an experienced user, or as a way to introduce an otherwise well-rounded Linux administrator to the one service or aspect of the system where expertise is lacking.

As I’ve read in this book and elsewhere, the RHCE is designed to test your ability to accomplish defined tasks on a working system, rather than fill in the blanks. This book would certainly prove useful in: helping an experienced administrator understand the working of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, confidently administer a system, and read documentation targed to an advanced audience with confidence.
