Product: 0672336936 Matthew Helmke does a great job covering all the bases for newer Ubuntu users (introduces the desktop interfaces as well as the command line) to the new features for the more advanced Ubuntu users (virtualization, OpenStack, Juju, etc). This book even covers some of the new capabilities for supporting touch/mobile platforms. If you want to learn more about Mir, the replacement for X, this book does not cover that.

Product: 0321636783 I got hired for a job where I spend almost everyday working in a Unix/Linux environment and I had very little knowledge of how to get around the system. In the week I had off between jobs I picked up this book and a book on Apache 2 and first day I went in I hit the ground running, even knowing a couple things my co-workers did not. That greatly put my mind to ease.

Product: 0738203335 I very much enjoyed this book. Mr Moody writes well and entertainingly about the origins of the Free Software Foundation and the Open Source Movement. The historic characters in the drama are well drawn and engaging. Time and again I’d remark ‘So, that’s where he/it came from!’ as Moody traced the origin of Apache or Samba or Alan Cox. I was very much reminded of the excellent history of the PC ‘Fire in the Valley’ that traces the origins of the PC industry to where we find it today.

Product: 0764547976 I’ve found this book to be a great introduction to Red Hat Linux. I’ve been using Linux on and off for the last few years, but I’ve only ever had a superficial understanding of it. This book was very useful in helping me figure out what’s going on with Red Hat 7, including specifics on the boot sequence. The book also has good introductory chapters on Samba and Apache; enough to get you started at least.

Product: Linux Bible I’m a computer engineering student and network administrator with a fairly heavy background in MS operating systems and programming. When I decided to move on to the *nix world, the Red Hat Linux 9 Bible came highly recommended from my other friends (also powerusers). While this book is not a complete reference for everything that can be done with Linux (ie. PHP), it’s an excellent introduction and reference, and provides a thorough walkthrough for starting a variety of services that are packaged with the RH9 distribution, including the Apache HTTPd, vsFTPd, sendmail, MySQL, BIND DNS, DHCP, and Samba servers.

Product: 013236039X I recommend Practical guide to Ubuntu Linux, 2nd ed. to all interested in understanding and running the Ubuntu Linux on their home, school or work machines. It is written by Mark Sobell whose book on Linux Commands, Editors and Shell Programming is one of my favorite IT titles of all. Book covers all topics you can think of - from a novice tutorial on the guided installation of the system to intermediate/advanced tasks such as shell scripting and installation of the server components such as Apache, DNS or mail server.

Product: 013236039X Despite it’s length, this book avoids (for the most part) degenerating into a concatenation of man pages. The text is concise and accurate, as far as I can tell, and examples are short and to the point. I was a bit surprised that even though such a large book wouldn’t seem attractive for beginners, some of the basics (e.g. file systems) are discussed in great detail, but without much technical depth.

Product: 0738203335 The most recent previous review is now about three years old, so an update may not be out of place. This book is a decade old, published shortly after the turn of the millennium and, more importantly, a couple of years after Gnu/Linux and the open source movement finally hit the big-time; i.e., acceptance by, and endorsements from, some of the major players in the computer arena, like IBM, Sun, Dell, Intel, etc.

Product: 0672336243 I’m a 20-year veteran of Windows-based computing. This was the second book I bought to support my first attempt to deploy a Linux-based IT infrastructure. It was more than good enough for me to set up a laptop, a server and a rudimentary Apache / PHP / MySQL web site. The first book, despite being only 18 months old, was hopelessly out of date. Enough has changed between Ubuntu’s version 12 and 13 that few of the examples it offered were easy to follow.
