Product: 0130158070 This is the best of the books I’ve seen on Linux system security. It focuses almost exclusively on freely available tools, and therefore should appeal to those poorly funded installations that use Linux because of its low cost. The authors cover many tools in the detail needed to obtain, install, and use them in an intelligent way. I was very impressed with the scope of coverage, from system policies to the use and configuration of crack, and everything in between.

Product: The Linux Command Line: A Complete Introduction Very few things in the realm of computers remain reliable and relatively constant for over 25 years; but the common core of Linux (and previously Unix) functionality have been powerful tools and relatively consistent since the days of System V ATT and Berkeley Distributions which I learned to love over a quarter century ago. Windowing systems and graphical user interfaces change between even contemporary Linux Distribution: UBUNTU, KUBUNTU, Fedora, Debian, SuSE, Red Hat; but an amazingly powerful common functionality exists among all Linux systems and similar tools in the Windows world (the Gnu utilities, MKS Shell, Cygwin, etc).

Product: 1849694605 Nothing to do with the movie. It is more of a matrix of the ways the Raspy can be used for various networking solutions. All of it is described in the well-known and useful form of recipes in the Rick Golden’s book Raspberry Pi Networking Cookbook. Very background-enriching, because it gives advises to people who just bought their first Pis and wonder where to start from. It really is very suitable as the first book to read on the matter.

Product: 0596004826 Unless you are a seasoned Linux guru who never forgets anything, then you should buy Linux in a Nutshell. This is quite possibly one of the most essential books for anyone working with Linux. If you are like me, reading documentation online can be tedious and having a handy reference volume is better than stumbling through Google search results. Linux in a Nutshell covers major user, programming, administration and networking tools for popular Linux distributions.

Product: 0596008015 Linux Annoyances for Geeks is a guide to help system administrators fine tune their systems for themselves and their users. The text compares various tweaks and modifications across several popular distributions. It’s part cookbook and part procedural manual for making modifications to Fedora/Red Hat, Debian, and SUSE systems for both Gnome and KDE desktops. The book was published in 2006. As such, some of the material is a bit dated.

Product: 0470082933 At some point, any Debian user will either give up Linux, getting back to the cave and Windows or end up googling to find a faster, better way to accomplish all those tedious, time consuming and error prone tasks that he manually does, over and over, through the graphical interface. This book, with its learn by doing approach, is a great companion to anyone wiling to get the most out of the penguin, unleashing the true power of Linux and taking control of his machine and its services through the command line.

Product: 1118935128 This is the best embedded Linux book available. It sets a new standard. The scope and real world practicality of the coverage is unequaled. I was drawn to the book for it’s embedded Debian Linux on ARM coverage, which is useful for other platforms in addition to the BeagleBone Black. I purchased BBB hardware so I could follow along with the book, and am enjoying that platform which I might not otherwise have explored.

Product: 1784392537 Considering how widely embedded Linux is used, we might expect more books on the subject. In fact, there are precious few, and it seems fewer are published now than ten years ago. Why is that? There is no shortage of books on other popular programming topics. It may be that writing competently about embedded Linux requires broader knowledge and greater skill. This new book Mastering Embedded Linux Programming is a surprisingly good book.

Product: 0471752827 I know, I know! I should have at least tried Linux by now. But I hadn’t. Then I found this book. Among all of the books on Linux at the book store, this one said, here’s seven different distributions of Linux that you can install. Furthermore, in Chapter 4 it had 35 pages describing the different distributions. Why, for instance, would I want to install Xandros, Mandriva or SuSE instead of the Fedora (Red Hat) core.
