Product: 0071545883 This book is for people who are beginners in Linux…but want to get into Linux System Administration… This book does a GREAT job into going into the basics on how to get a Linux Server up and running. Has some AWESOME configuration examples that actually get you up and running! I, to this day, still use the DNS configuration examples to set up DNS servers at my job today!

Product: Linux Bible I’m a computer engineering student and network administrator with a fairly heavy background in MS operating systems and programming. When I decided to move on to the *nix world, the Red Hat Linux 9 Bible came highly recommended from my other friends (also powerusers). While this book is not a complete reference for everything that can be done with Linux (ie. PHP), it’s an excellent introduction and reference, and provides a thorough walkthrough for starting a variety of services that are packaged with the RH9 distribution, including the Apache HTTPd, vsFTPd, sendmail, MySQL, BIND DNS, DHCP, and Samba servers.

Product: 0596003439 Seeing as I’ve recommended this book several times on Reddit, I figured I would do a brief review of this book. Realistically this will be more of a summation of what to expect/why you should pick this book up. In short: are you administering a flavor of UNIX or Linux? Do you need to brush up on commands or need to learn the system quickly in a short order of time?

Product: 013236039X I recommend Practical guide to Ubuntu Linux, 2nd ed. to all interested in understanding and running the Ubuntu Linux on their home, school or work machines. It is written by Mark Sobell whose book on Linux Commands, Editors and Shell Programming is one of my favorite IT titles of all. Book covers all topics you can think of - from a novice tutorial on the guided installation of the system to intermediate/advanced tasks such as shell scripting and installation of the server components such as Apache, DNS or mail server.

Product: Linux for Beginners: An Introduction to the Linux Operating System and Command Line I’m a casual linux user as I have a DLink DNS-323 that has a basic linux distro on it. Since I don’t use it all that often, I’ve barely scratched the surface of linux. The DNS uses only a command-line, but I like the fact that this book also includes some information about some of the GUI options.

Product: 1430219122 Turnbull, Lieverdink & Matotek should do a public service to PRO Linux Administrators and possibly drop the Pro from their Pro Linux System Administration book. For once I totally agree with all the other reviewers (never mind there are only two) of this book in the fact that this is NOT an advanced server title. That is about the only serious complaint I have since accidentally enough since I am not anywhere close to being a seasonal Linux user, much less a PRO.

Product: 0321832043 Have you ever been responsible for a server and had something go wrong? Ever been in a situation where you didn’t know what was causing the problem or how to figure it out? I think any of us who develop code, work in quality assurance, or administer systems have had this sort of experience. Sometimes problems appear that were never covered in a class or training session. Experience is an amazing teacher, but gaining that experience can be intimidating and sometimes painful.

Product: RHCSA/RHCE Red Hat Linux Certification Study Guide This is the sixth edition of Jang’s Red Hat Linux Certification Study Guide, though it has in previous editions been known under slightly different titles due to the change in Red Hat’s test titles. With the transition to Red Hat Enterprise 6 and the introduction of Red Hat’s RHCSA (Certified System Administrator) test, this book has undergone a significant revision cycle. First things first - the book comes with a CD that contains a total of four practice exams, two for the RHCSA exam and two for the RHCE exam.

Product: 0071545883 Steve did a wonderful job with this book. He answers nearly all the important questions you have before finishing the book. It has a really good section on firewalls in Linux as well as compiling your own kernel. The section on DNS was really quite nice. I always had a difficult time understanding DNS in Linux until reading this book and have successfully set up DNS on a Linux Server.

Product: 1430219300 Several months ago I was asked to evaluate a LAMP platform ( Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP ) for an in-house intranet application. I choose CentOS and this book to begin. So how did I get on. Getting Started with CentOS … This is the first section of the book and spans 4 chapters. It answers the questions, why choose CentOS, installation and where to download the files from, a few basic commands and how to patch your fresh install with the latest updates using the YUM tool.
