Product: 0132757273 Full disclosure: I am a UNIX/Linux system admin by profession, and we generally don’t use the GUIs much. I will say I was slightly disappointed. What’s weak? Coverage of systemd and pam and lvm. What’s missing entirely? Network bonding, clustering and the Red Hat Satellite server. What else could it use? A whole section on command line account creation and administration. What’s very good? The coverage of CUPS is one of the best.

Product: 007148874X I have taken this book out of my library while waiting for a new Linux+ study guide, which is not the same person who wrote this one. I read the first chapter and I have worked with Linux and Unix for many years and are familiar with both. It was interesting some of the topics that were mentioned but at issues were the chapter questions that I noticed had some errors and asked some information that was not discussed in the chapter.

Product: Linux Bible This is a good source to review and deepen your knowledge of Linux from the command terminal. While it’s geared for RHLE and Fedora, it works quite well with other distros with very little modification to the material. Well worth the read if you’ve already dealt with Linux at an introductory level and you want to sharpen your skills a bit. Rating: 4 0470230193 Count: 52

Product: 059600589X I found this book to be very readable and a good way of getting up to speed on Linux. The book: (i) guides you how to load Fedora onto your computer, (ii) describes how Linux works, and (iii) discusses Linux applications, networking and scripts. The author also touches on the Red Hat Enterprise version of Linux throughout the text. The Linux installation section is well written with plenty of screen shots showing the various screens during installation.

Product: Intrusion Prevention and Active Response ‘Intrusion Prevention and Active Response’ (IPAAR) is a good book, as long as you confine your expectations to open source solutions. The foreword says ‘Security professionals are going to be approaching management for funding in the next year or two to procure intrusion prevention devices, especially intelligent switches from 3Com (TippingPoint), as well as host-based intrusion prevention solutions like Cisco Security Agent, Platform Logic, Ozone, or CrossTec.

Product: 0470497025 The author is a very experienced assembly language programmer, and he covers topics in a very organized way so that the reader can fully understand at each step of the way. This is a bit boring for programmers who are familiar with assembly language, even those vastly different from Intel’s, but those readers can skip the first three chapters and skim parts of the others. The author does a fantastic job of focusing on the most important information needed for assembly language programming.

Product: 0132757273 I highly recommend this book. It is one of the best Linux book I have ever read, and I have learned a lot from many chapters of this book. The tech information is accurated and very well explained and verified (with the exception on snmp chapter, which don’t seem to work well for me – maybe the software is updated after this book is published). The DVD of Fedora 15 is included in the book, so for those haven’t learn how to download and burn iso DVD, this will get you start quickly (and you can gain some time to lear how to burn iso image later).

Product: 1449316697 This pocket guide isn’t worth the paper it is printed on. It is primarily for a Fedora/Red Hat distro and really doesn’t do a good job at describing the command uses. I have been teaching Linux for eight years and have been using Linux since the mid 90’s. I have switched to the Linux Phrasebook by Scott Granneman. It is a much better guidebook for administrators and people learning how to use Linux.
