Product: 0596007876 This book is partly Knoppix specific hacks, partly more generic Linux tips, however the real value are the tips showing how Knoppix can be used as a tool. The Knoppix-specific hacks are useful but only valuable if you use Knoppix all the time, which is not as crazy an idea as it sounds if you look at some of the hacks listed. Don’t discount these tips though, many of them are necessary for the later ones.

Product: 0596007876 When it comes to Live CDs Knoppix is by far one of the most popular. So much so that many of the other Live CDs are remasters of the basic Knoppix system. This book contains a lot of hacks that can better be described as how to do all the things you were wonder if Knoppix could do. This includes booting Knoppix with cheat codes, working with the Knoppix desktop, installing Knoppix onto your desktop computer, repairing a Linux installation, repairing a Windows installation, creating your own remastered Live CD, copying the system to RAM so the CD player becomes available, using it as an emergency router, file server, or web server, using it for forensics, and scanning a Windows file system for viruses.

Product: 0596007876 This book comes with a Knoppix bootable CD. However, I could not get my laptop to boot with it. It got stuck at a fairly early stage. This was surprising since I have successfully booted with both Mandrake and Suse. The book did tell me how to download Knoppix from the internet but it’s 700 MB so a CD would be better. This book is most useful if you are already an experienced

Product: 0321159985 Review I’ve been interested in running a Linux desktop lately, and I’ve looked at a number of books to help me get there. The problem is that you either get a good book on installing Linux, or you get a book that delves into the guts of Linux. But what if you just want to learn how to do day-to-day activities (like create documents, spreadsheets, listen to music, etc.

Product: 0596007876 Knoppix is and surely will only ever be a niche product. But what a niche. To some people, there is a compelling fascination with being able to carry around the essence of a computer in a CD. Much less riskier than losing or damaging an entire computer. Plus the fact that a Knoppix version is usually a sturdy, stable linux, can also be appealing. If this captures your interest, then many of the hacks will be germane.

Product: 0131478230 Sobell expands on his earlier books to give us this latest offering. Somewhat monumental in scope. Basically because the intended audience is quite diverse. He suggests that you could fall into any of these categories - system administrator, programmer, or new Linux user. And if you are a sysadmin or programmer, your prior experience with Linux might vary from none to considerable. The book also attempts not to play favourites concerning the various Linux distributions that exist - from Red Hat, Novell/SUSE, Debian, Knoppix and others.
