Product: 1118554213 If you are like me and know nothing about a Raspberry Pi, this book is for you. It takes you from a basic introduction of the hardware and Raspian (Linux) operating system and moves on to setting it up and programming it using Python. While this book won’t be your only guide to using the RPi, it’s certainly a good place to start. Sean McManus does of a great job of explaining it all in terms we can all understand.

Product: 1449344216 This O’Reilly book comes from the same folks who produce Make magazine, which has lots of fun and informative projects for folks who want to dabble with devices of all sorts. From the first chapter (only 17 pages), it provides warnings to save your from frying your Pi, breaking the board, and offers suggestions to build a durable assembly. I love the drawing, they’re detailed and well labelled. If you have the parts needed to get the Raspberry Pi going (including USB power supply, HDMI cable, powered USB hub, and an SD card with an image of the operating system) then you should have a running system by the end of that chapter.

Product: 1449344216 (Note: this is the same book that comes with current releases of the Make Raspberry Pi Starter Kit.) The Raspberry Pi: an ultra-cheap single board computer designed for tinkerers of all ages, among other things to keep from mangling the work/school/family systems. The book: a whirlwind tour of the computer and the Raspbian Linux distro, from rationale to hardware hacking. It’s not quite a cookbook; it’s too basic for that, and O’Reilly is probably writing one as I write this.

Product: 1518684777 This book gets a five from me because I learned. A circuit board with endless possibilities, RaspherryPi is explained in easy to understand language. The first thing I learned was RaspberrPi needs needs Linux and most of the software associated with Linux is free. The author went on to explain in easy-to-understand language how to set up RaspberryPi and informed me of the possibilities as well as the limitation.

Product: 1430248211 This is one of five books I purchase from Amazon related to the Raspberry Pi. This book is well written and the author does not disrespect the reader and the material included adapts to all levels of expertise. I suggest one thing before you start reading this book, purchase the Raspberry Pi and all Raspberry Pi accessories. By the way, the reader is not familiar with Linux or Unix this book will be a great introduction.

Product: 0071807837 This is another very successful book written by Simon Monk. The Raspberry Pi is a very inexpensive stripped-down Linux-based computer. You have to supply your own enclosure, power supply, keyboard, mouse, etc. It is sort of like buying a house with the roof not included. Still, it is a tremendous buy at under $25. This book explains how to attach and configure everything. Beyond that, there is lots of information on programming and using the Raspberry Pi, much of it new to me, but explained quite clearly.

Product: 111846446X This book has a message beyond introducing you to the Pi. Eben Upton, co-creator of the Raspberry Pi, and one of the author’s of the book, takes you through the history of development and the ideological motivation for developing the Pi. Succinctly to paraphrase his argument in the foreword: Kids don’t actually know much about technology because they cannot program; GUI is as far as they get and that isn’t getting very far.
