Product: 0072253657 I used this book right before taking the exam and passed! This is a GREAT book! I have 2 years of Linux Admin experience and this book filled all the gaps that I had. If you read this book…and do ALL the labs (along with Red Hat’s documentation and prep guide); it will prepare you for the test. I personally didn’t take the class (I just took the test) and I passed using the labs in this book.

Product: Linux Bible I’m a computer engineering student and network administrator with a fairly heavy background in MS operating systems and programming. When I decided to move on to the *nix world, the Red Hat Linux 9 Bible came highly recommended from my other friends (also powerusers). While this book is not a complete reference for everything that can be done with Linux (ie. PHP), it’s an excellent introduction and reference, and provides a thorough walkthrough for starting a variety of services that are packaged with the RH9 distribution, including the Apache HTTPd, vsFTPd, sendmail, MySQL, BIND DNS, DHCP, and Samba servers.

Product: 0131478230 This book is the best distro-agnostic foundational Linux reference I’ve ever seen, out of dozens of Linux-related books I’ve read. It’s a constant battle to find a good Linux book that isn’t wedded implicitly or explicitly to a specific distribution (usually something Red Hat related), more about KDE and GNOME applications and other specific applications the authors favor than about real Linux skills, or both. Finding this book was a real stroke of luck.

Product: Linux Bible This is a good book for beginners. Downside: It focuses on commands used for Fedora and RedHat Linux. This is disappointing because Ubuntu is the most popular flavor of Linux now. The authors should address this gap, but they don’t. Upside, the language is clear and they remind you how to continue to configure the system from earlier chapters if you’ve followed previous examples. Rating: 4 0470230193 Count: 52

Product: 0132757273 This is a good book for getting up to speed on Fedora 19 however even on this, there are some gaps. As far as Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), it is not a good resource. One glaring example of this the focus on Sendmail when with both Fedora and RHEL, the mail server of choice is Postfix; Red Hat doesn’t even teach Sendmail in its training programs where Postfix is taught.

Product: 0596003439 Seeing as I’ve recommended this book several times on Reddit, I figured I would do a brief review of this book. Realistically this will be more of a summation of what to expect/why you should pick this book up. In short: are you administering a flavor of UNIX or Linux? Do you need to brush up on commands or need to learn the system quickly in a short order of time?

Product: Linux Bible Comprehensive introduction to Linux with uses latest versions of Red Hat Enterprise and Fedora to demonstrate examples with mentions of Ubuntu here and there. Understandable since the author works at Red Hat so probably a slight bias because of it. Covers just about everything you’d ever want to know about Linux and more so you’ll most likely end up using this as a reference book than something you read from start to finish.

Product: 0072253657 I bought this book to get a premilinary insight into Linux and to move toward the path of certification. This book has served both as a guide to understanding basic Linux administration and as a solid reference. The material is based upon Red Hat 8, so newer Linux concepts such as Logical Volume Management are not covered. Useful for computer technicians learning the basics of Linux at a low cost.

Product: 0764545744 When I decide to learn something new, I like to have two books: One, a step-by-step concise guide that just has me doing neat stuff, and two, a big reference manual. I like the O’Reilly book Learning Red Hat Linux as a guide to tell me what to learn next and giving basic instructions. But, when I needed more clarity on a topic, Red Hat Linux 7 Bible gave me lots of in-depth information.

Product: 0596000715 With so many books about Linux on the market, it is really a difficult to know which books are good and which are not. Learning Red Hat Linux, published by O’Reilly at their famous book series, shows the basic steps at the Linux world, based on the Red Hat distribution. This book doesn’t show Linux’s advanced configurations, but this is the greatest point of this work: it is a very easy, quick and pratical guide for all those who need to quickly learn this new operating system and doesn’t want to spend time reading complicated and hard to understand books.
