Product: 0782127355 Great book to get you started with Linux Admin. Covers many issues a sys admin is expected to know. However it doesn’t cover ftp. It just mentions it. It has a pretty good chapter on sendmail. To get your server up and running I would recommend Kabir’s RedHat book. Stanfield’s book will help you mantain the server. Don’t miss the all new Linux Administration Handbook ISBN 0-13-008466-2. Rating: 4 0782127355 Count: 7

Product: 0596005288 I have a growing disdain for Microsoft and turned to Linux a few years ago. The only problem with that is that Linux, like Unix is very powerful and has many wonderful tools to do things a Windows box would never do. (Like host multiple Windows domains on a single Linux computer with Samba, heh.) The problem? It would take years to learn on your own what you can get from a Linux certification in a few weeks of study.

Product: How Linux Works I’ve worked in software and systems for thirty plus years, and have used multiple flavors of Unix and Linux, both as a developer and user; I’ve installed and configured pretty much every operating system from MS-DOS to WIndows to OSX to Ubuntu / Red Hat / VxWorks / etc - this book is the resource I wish I had all along. I learned a dozen things in the first two (review) chapters that fundamentally changed my understanding of Linux and how to use it, and I’ve gained a much more fundamental understanding of operating systems in general.

Product: 0596008015 Linux is a great operating system but like every other one it has some annoyances that may crop up from time to time. The purpose of this book is to help the reader to get Linux to work the way they want it to without getting annoyed in the process. As such the target audience is the Linux power user and system administrators. Some of the areas covered include configuring GNOME applications in KDE and configuring KDE applications in GNOME, X Window configuration, working with CDs and DVDs, configuring sound, converting from Outlook, interfacing with various Instant Messaging programs, working with Microsoft Office documents, multimedia, hardware issues, startup problems, system maintenance, CUPS printing, using Samba, and various administrative tasks.

Product: 0130158070 This is the best of the books I’ve seen on Linux system security. It focuses almost exclusively on freely available tools, and therefore should appeal to those poorly funded installations that use Linux because of its low cost. The authors cover many tools in the detail needed to obtain, install, and use them in an intelligent way. I was very impressed with the scope of coverage, from system policies to the use and configuration of crack, and everything in between.

Product: The Linux Command Line: A Complete Introduction Very few things in the realm of computers remain reliable and relatively constant for over 25 years; but the common core of Linux (and previously Unix) functionality have been powerful tools and relatively consistent since the days of System V ATT and Berkeley Distributions which I learned to love over a quarter century ago. Windowing systems and graphical user interfaces change between even contemporary Linux Distribution: UBUNTU, KUBUNTU, Fedora, Debian, SuSE, Red Hat; but an amazingly powerful common functionality exists among all Linux systems and similar tools in the Windows world (the Gnu utilities, MKS Shell, Cygwin, etc).

Product: 0596004826 Unless you are a seasoned Linux guru who never forgets anything, then you should buy Linux in a Nutshell. This is quite possibly one of the most essential books for anyone working with Linux. If you are like me, reading documentation online can be tedious and having a handy reference volume is better than stumbling through Google search results. Linux in a Nutshell covers major user, programming, administration and networking tools for popular Linux distributions.

Product: Intrusion Prevention and Active Response Intrusion Prevention and Active Response (IPAR) is a welcome departure from many books covering intrusion prevention and detection. The authors clearly distinguish between intrusion detection systems (IDS) and intrusion prevention systems (IPS), a distinction often conflated in media, training manuals and other educational material. The level of presentation is well suited for someone familiar with security principles, techniques and methods. If you are new to Linux, then you will probably need supporting materials to get through the more complex chapters.

Product: 1430219122 Turnbull, Lieverdink & Matotek should do a public service to PRO Linux Administrators and possibly drop the Pro from their Pro Linux System Administration book. For once I totally agree with all the other reviewers (never mind there are only two) of this book in the fact that this is NOT an advanced server title. That is about the only serious complaint I have since accidentally enough since I am not anywhere close to being a seasonal Linux user, much less a PRO.
