Product: 0596002726 This is a general book on Linux and with a general guide to installing Linux. With 2 chapters and 43 pages on installation, its general procedures are next to useless. There is no specific distribution and hardware so at least your installation can be modelled from it. At least there is a few hints like using Fdisk with /MBR (p88) for dual boot Win/Linux machines. Almost all of the book is oriented to the command line within a terminal window.

Product: 1593271441 This book gives some good breakdown to coding and processor instructions. The included CD is an antiquated version of Ubuntu which is very out dated and has security issues in itself. I am an IT pro, I have been using Linux since RedHat version 1 and I am a user of it daily in my professional and personal life. The CD is so outdated that it will not load on any of my newer machines outside of a VM… inside the VM it has issues as well with the network and monitor resolutions… very much a P.

Product: 1450588301 I’m working in a job where I use Red Hat Linux and FreeBSD daily. While I only have a few years of experience with Linux, there is many times where I need some details or forget a certain command. Many of the books I keep at my desk are the typical, 600+ page manual guides that offer commands with details such as when you would use it. The problem I found with these books is the overall length and extended amount of information.

Product: RHCSA/RHCE Red Hat Linux Certification Study Guide I bought this book to get a leg up on studying when I received word that I was funded to take the RH124, RH135, and RH255 courses and exams. While I’ve used various Linux distros since the late 90’s, it has been almost that long since I’d used Red Hat, so I picked up this book to improve my knowledge a couple months before the classes.

Product: 0764549685 With improved topics that include KD3 and GNOME2, this well-balanced text is a respectable one-stop shop for followers of ‘Red Hat Linux 8 Operating System’. The layout of this book is fantastic. Every aspect of the software (including installation and configuration) received generous attention. The overall outlook of the book (and its attached CD-ROM) indicates that a beginner can handle it; although that I would recommend it for an intermediate or advanced user of the software.

Product: 0596004826 I have always wanted to try Linux. I built three or four linux boxes over the years, I think the first was RedHat 5.2. I set them up, loaded Linux, not without some difficulty with the first distros, and looked at them. I played Solitare. I played some of the games, like Mah Jong. I looked at them. Then I formatted the drive and went back to Windows. I could not get far past the desktop, I could not get the next step: OPERATION.

Product: Intrusion Prevention and Active Response ‘Intrusion Prevention and Active Response’ (IPAAR) is a good book, as long as you confine your expectations to open source solutions. The foreword says ‘Security professionals are going to be approaching management for funding in the next year or two to procure intrusion prevention devices, especially intelligent switches from 3Com (TippingPoint), as well as host-based intrusion prevention solutions like Cisco Security Agent, Platform Logic, Ozone, or CrossTec.

Product: 0596005288 The first thing I want to say about reading this book is : I passed! Certification books serve four purposes: first, they serve as a way to prepare for computerized certification exams. Second, they provide a training plan for learning the objectives in the certification. Third, can a book explain system administration concepts while limiting a readers exposure to difficult, elusive topics until later? Fourth, can a book like this still be useful post-certification?

Product: 0131367366 I’ve been working on linux for more than a year, and this was a book assigned for a class. Since then, I’ve bought four other linux books. But this one is usually the first book I will consult regardless. The problems with the book are: that the book is very old, and that it doesn’t discuss newer versions of Netscape and Red Hat and other tools. Linux has gotten a lot more user friendly, and this book won’t provide a lot of help about using the most modern window manager.

Product: 0764547976 Nuts and bolts information only. No frills, no fluff nor are there tutorials that are so unrealistic to real world applications. The author does an excellent job of getting to the point and explaining features of Red Hat 6.1 quickly and concisely. Usually, the Red Hat webpage has the answers to most questions when you can filter out the useless fluff to find the information you need. Since searching Red Hat’s webpage for answers to your questions now yields more useless discussion forum questions of someone who wants to install the latest peripherials on yesterday’s hardware, yesterday’s kernel, and yesterday’s Red Hat version 2 than meat to solve problems at hand, I bought this book to be quicker and more efficent to find the information I need to use for daily administration of the Red Hat servers I maintain at work to keep co-workers, management, and customer’s happy.
