Product: 1783982144 With the advent of the constantly connected computers (not only the Internet) the attack surface has increased immensely. At the same time the user machines became as powerful as the servers were. However, there was very little done to educate computer professionals to detect, prevent and cope intrusions or penetration attacks. Kali Linux Network Scanning Cookbook can serve very well as one to close the gap. A little on Kali Linux: it is a specialized distribution for penetration testing and forensics purposes.

Product: 0672336936 Matthew Helmke does a great job covering all the bases for newer Ubuntu users (introduces the desktop interfaces as well as the command line) to the new features for the more advanced Ubuntu users (virtualization, OpenStack, Juju, etc). This book even covers some of the new capabilities for supporting touch/mobile platforms. If you want to learn more about Mir, the replacement for X, this book does not cover that.

Product: Linux Bible I’m a computer engineering student and network administrator with a fairly heavy background in MS operating systems and programming. When I decided to move on to the *nix world, the Red Hat Linux 9 Bible came highly recommended from my other friends (also powerusers). While this book is not a complete reference for everything that can be done with Linux (ie. PHP), it’s an excellent introduction and reference, and provides a thorough walkthrough for starting a variety of services that are packaged with the RH9 distribution, including the Apache HTTPd, vsFTPd, sendmail, MySQL, BIND DNS, DHCP, and Samba servers.

Product: 0596002726 Before I state my thoughts on this book, at over 950 pages this is one of the biggest books you will find on a computer shelf, so it’s worth providing a list of the content within: 01. Intro to Linux 02. Installation 03. Desktop Environments 04. Basic Unix commands 05. Web Browsers & IMs 06. E-Mail Clients 07. Games 08. Office Applications 09. Multimedia 10. Product: 1494295504 The best way to describe this book is a cheat sheet or refrence guide. This book won’t teach you how to really do anything you need to know that going in, but as a guide to keep next to your laptop or in a bag when you travel can be handy. Nmap, Powershell, Linux, Windows, SQL, basic networking Rating: 5 1494295504 Count: 9

Product: 0596002726 I was in a urgent need of some fairly serious Linux bootcamp. This book worked, and this is how: I hadn’t had any significant Linux experience prior to buying this book. Sure, I knew a few basic UNIX commands, who doesn’t? After installing Ubuntu it became clear that I simply will have to spend too much time googling solutions for every problem. I went ahead and bought this book, read it cover to cover in about two days, and my fluentness in Linux administration/programming has increased dramatically.

Product: 1119277655 At barely over one hundred twenty pages Linux Server Security should easily clear the first bar with its intended audience of admins and IT staff its compact enough to work through in a week or two of dedicated effort without feeling overwhelmed. The breakdown into ten tutorial-style chapters of 5-10 pages independent of sequence and content makes the book even more effective the author encourages readers to pick and choose what most interests them and not worry about skipping what doesnt.

Product: 0672336243 I’m a 20-year veteran of Windows-based computing. This was the second book I bought to support my first attempt to deploy a Linux-based IT infrastructure. It was more than good enough for me to set up a laptop, a server and a rudimentary Apache / PHP / MySQL web site. The first book, despite being only 18 months old, was hopelessly out of date. Enough has changed between Ubuntu’s version 12 and 13 that few of the examples it offered were easy to follow.

Product: 0596002726 The Running Linux book is expanded and updated regularly and is designed to bring the casual and new user up to speed with using Linux as well as updated information. This is all done is a distribution-neutral context which makes it one of the better guides available. Of course that also presents problems when a particular distribution does something a little bit different from the norm. If you are a serious Linux enthusiast and have been for some time you will find the book too elementary for your needs but those new to Linux will find it a great introduction.

Product: Intrusion Prevention and Active Response Intrusion Prevention and Active Response (IPAR) is a welcome departure from many books covering intrusion prevention and detection. The authors clearly distinguish between intrusion detection systems (IDS) and intrusion prevention systems (IPS), a distinction often conflated in media, training manuals and other educational material. The level of presentation is well suited for someone familiar with security principles, techniques and methods. If you are new to Linux, then you will probably need supporting materials to get through the more complex chapters.
