Product: Linux Bible I already know Linux, but I bought this book as a desk reference. It was well worth it and has saved me grief more than once. Excellent info on setting up web servers, etc. However, its got pretty much NOTHING on MySQL which is odd because what website in todays world doesn’t require a db? The info on SELinux, web servers, file servers (SAMBA) and email alone made it worth buying.

Product: 1430219300 Several months ago I was asked to evaluate a LAMP platform ( Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP ) for an in-house intranet application. I choose CentOS and this book to begin. So how did I get on. Getting Started with CentOS … This is the first section of the book and spans 4 chapters. It answers the questions, why choose CentOS, installation and where to download the files from, a few basic commands and how to patch your fresh install with the latest updates using the YUM tool.

Product: 0470147628 I used an earlier edition of this book as a textbook for a Linux programming class - it is that good. This book presumes a good knowledge of C language, but only to understand the existing code, which is available for download from the publisher. The breadth and precision of presentation, from shell basics to introductory SQL for MySQL is impressive. Rating: 5 0470147628 Count: 10

Product: 1590594444 Hardening Linux by James Turnbull, stands out in my mind as a vitally important text that clearly lays out how to make your Linux boxes as secure as possible. Mr. Turnbull has done a remarkable job in delineating the potential vulnerabilities, and how to mitigate them. Each chapter covers a particular focus area in depth, with carefully worded and easy-to-follow examples. In the cases where you need to install some other piece of software to provide the extra security, he gives you the step-by-step details, leaving nothing for misinterpretation.

Product: 0789735318 I’ve been reading through this book for the CEH based on it’s high reviews here at amazon. I have not yet taken the CEH but am writing this review based on my current findings as a general security practitioner. I’ve read the majority of the book, and while some sections are alright, I find others disturbing… Chapters 1-3 seemed fine, covering concepts i would expect to see on the exam.

Product: Linux Bible It seems like a lot of the Linux books out there right now pick a single distribution and teach you that one. Wiley’s Linux Bible (2005 Edition) by Christopher Negus takes a different approach that may be valuable to you. Chapter List: Part 1 - Linux First Steps: Starting With Linux; Running Commands from the Shell; Getting into the Desktop Part 2 - Running The Show: Learning Basic Administration; Getting on the Internet; Securing Linux
