Product: 0596527209 I found this book a very useful howto to get up to speed in using Ubuntu and Linux in general. I loved the section on installing ATI and Nvidia drivers in Ubuntu as well as some of the multi-media hacks which has only helped to get more out of this os. As Ubuntu is storming the linux world as the most popular distro (see distrowatch) this book offers a broad reference for someone wanted to get more depth from the OS.

Product: 0132354136 I have read The Official Ubuntu Book from beginning to end and found it to be more of a reference book. If I had not read Ubuntu Linux for Non-Geeks first I would have been lost. The book is a good read but it’s not for the newbie, its more for someone that already has ubuntu experience and is looking for a little guide. The book is written as if it assumes you already have some knowledge of Ubuntu, which I luckily did after reading the first book.

Product: 159327257X I am very new to Ubuntu Linux and found this book to be a great help. The beginning chapters will get you up and running with little or no pain. Once you get up and running the later chapters get into using the OS and working with programs that are included. A Very straight forward read and can be used for later reference. A must have for your Ubuntu library.

Product: Linux Bible The book is pretty much well written and does contain a lot of good info, however Ive got to drop my rating for the overly-hyped marketing. While the author is clear that the team putting this together is a fully Red Hat group the covers & write-ups claim …a focus on the latest version of Red Hat…Fedora…and Ubuntu…. Yes, Ubuntu is regularly mentioned and a few Ubuntu instructions are presented but understand that the book really is about Red Hat/Fedora and just barely scratches any Debian products.

Product: 1849695105 I have recentlygrabbed a copy of Penetration Testing with the Bash Shell…. My observation is,there are security incidents all over, but there are very few booksavailable, yet it seems there are even fewer mature specialists tolearn from. Keith Makan surely is one of the top ones. My intent wasnarrow: to widen my knowledge on the penetration testing tactics, andI hoped to apply at least a few at work. This book helped.

Product: The Linux Command Line: A Complete Introduction Working in the IT field I have always used Linux in some form or another. Most have been common release distro’s where you could get by navigating just the GUI. I however wanted to dig a bit deeper and set up a Ubuntu server for media and archived school work. I picked up this book to get a better overview of what is capable when using shell commands and the answer is everything.

Product: 1590596277 Keir Thomas puts everything you need to get started with the distribution of Linux getting the most press these days all in one handy tome. All you’ll need is a decent computer, the software, and you’re set! The book’s chapters - 34 in all - deal with the various aspects of installing/configuring, using and personalizing Ubuntu for your tastes. Stating true to the political slant of most open source and Linux advocates, the book spares no expense when taking potshots at rival Microsoft and denouncing the company’s operating system and Windows’ implied failure to live up to its billing as a high-performance, stable, secure operating system.

Product: 0672336936 Matthew Helmke does a great job covering all the bases for newer Ubuntu users (introduces the desktop interfaces as well as the command line) to the new features for the more advanced Ubuntu users (virtualization, OpenStack, Juju, etc). This book even covers some of the new capabilities for supporting touch/mobile platforms. If you want to learn more about Mir, the replacement for X, this book does not cover that.

Product: 0470497025 If you truly want to learn assembler you HAVE to learn memory addressing and this book will absolutely teach you that. After you have read, studied, experimented and understand the main concept of memory addressing (base + index), etc in assembler everything else becomes so much easier. THIS book will definitely get you well on your way. I think it should be a first book in anyone’s learning arsenal.
