Product: 013236039X If you’ve decided on Debian/Ubuntu Linux as your distribution and you’re not already a Linux expert then do yourself justice and purchase a copy of this book. It’s thorough and comprehensive; all the while it’s insightful and intriguing. The author does a competent job fleshing out concepts while not drowning the reader in distribution specific jargon (which is a real weakness in some Linux texts). The chapters are logically structured working up to more advanced topics and the author never insults the readers intelligence.

Product: 013236039X Learning Ubuntu Linux, then this is the book for you. Though be warned, this book is for 10.04, not the most current edition of Ubuntu, so some commands and screens will differ. Rating: 4 013236039X Count: 13

Product: 059600222X On the one hand, a typical Linux user is going to install a pre-built package (Red Hat, Suse, Ubuntu, etc) on pre-built PC. This book isn’t for them - there are plenty of books for learning and using Linux. On the other hand, embedded systems developers often have a good, working toolchain from a vendor like WindRiver or DataLight. This book isn’t necessarily for them, either. But if you’re building your own system: your own DIO controllers, perhaps with a mix of flash drives and conventional storage, perhaps remote booting … and if you’ve decided to use Open Source as your platform …

Product: LINUX: The Ultimate Beginner’s Guide! Best thing about it was the cute drawing on the cover. Acronyms and abbreviations were used with defining them. I learned nothing useful from this book. I put it into the newspaper recycling bin. I’m just starting to learn how to use Linux (Ubuntu and Debian). Not a good reason to kill a tree, not even a small one. Rating: 1 1519453477 Count: 34

Product: 0672336936 I think this is a good summary of the more important things about Ubuntu. It doesn’t go into the depth I wished for. for instance, the Unity GUI is so weird for the standard Windows user (talking about Windows up to version 7 here) that more material on this would be necessary. Unity is the first thing you see about Ubuntu Linux and it is hard to master so I think there should be more material on this.

Product: 1593271441 This book gives some good breakdown to coding and processor instructions. The included CD is an antiquated version of Ubuntu which is very out dated and has security issues in itself. I am an IT pro, I have been using Linux since RedHat version 1 and I am a user of it daily in my professional and personal life. The CD is so outdated that it will not load on any of my newer machines outside of a VM… inside the VM it has issues as well with the network and monitor resolutions… very much a P.

Product: 0672336243 It is easy to read, If you have the 2012 Edition you can skip this one. You will learn everything about Ubuntu and you will become a Linux power user. The author assumes that you are comfortable with computers and know at least the basics of computing and networking. If you are a novice then you will have to read this book slowly. (Even so you will learn)

Product: UNIX and Linux System Administration Handbook My previous Linux book dated to 1995, so it was long overdue for replacement. I selected this one on the basis of its publication date, hoping it would have material on the various distributions that have appeared in the meantime. This expectation was largely but not completely fulfilled, hence the 4⁄5 rating. At the moment, I am using Ubuntu 11.10, and it is somewhat different than previous editions.

Product: 159327257X I’ve tried to figure out Linux many times before but could just never get it. This book is remarkable. If you’re a Linux guru this is not the book for you (it’s far too simplistic for a Linux guru), but if you are a person running Windows that is sick of how poorly it performs and how much software costs, and want to switch over to a far superior operating system while making your computer faster, more secure, and never spending a penny of money on software again, this is the book for you.

Product: 1590596277 Ubuntu Linux is the easiest Linux distribution yet. I’m a computer programmer by trade and I have played with Linux in the past and felt it just wasn’t ready for the mainstream public. Linux has come a long way in the last couple of years and Ubuntu proves that Linux IS a mature O/S that can be learned and loved by anyone. Beginning Ubuntu Linux is one of the best books I have ever read about any Linux distribution.
