Product: 1430219998 I read the reviews before ordering this book, and was glad to see that it did meet my needs as a Ubuntu Linux beginner looking for answers. I am glad that it focuses on Ubuntu Linux and deals with Windows as needed, versus ignoring it. There are so many versions of Linux, that I am glad to have chosen Ubuntu soon after some false starts with other obsolete versions.

Product: How Linux Works I’ve worked in software and systems for thirty plus years, and have used multiple flavors of Unix and Linux, both as a developer and user; I’ve installed and configured pretty much every operating system from MS-DOS to WIndows to OSX to Ubuntu / Red Hat / VxWorks / etc - this book is the resource I wish I had all along. I learned a dozen things in the first two (review) chapters that fundamentally changed my understanding of Linux and how to use it, and I’ve gained a much more fundamental understanding of operating systems in general.

Product: 059610104X This is basically a small format pocket reference to five of the most common desktop distributions of Linux. The distributions covered are Fedora, Gentoo, Mandriva, SUSE, and Ubuntu. The author covers the basics of navigating the GNOME and KDE desktop environments and the applications that come with each of the distributions. Deviating from the normal layout of such texts it is organized by the type of application instead of by the Linux distribution.

Product: 1590596277 Ubuntu Linux is a Debian based distribution that aims to be particularly user friendly and does an excellent job at it. A desktop focused product, it comes with all the most commonly used software including a full Office Suite (including a database and slideshow product), web browser, instant messaging, audio player, movie player, CD/DVD burner, photo editor, and of course various games, screen savers, and utilities. The book has a good section on getting things up and running correctly that covers all the most common problems that you might encounter during an install.

Product: 1430219998 This comprehensive introduction to the Ubuntu Linux Distribution recognizes that users from the MS Windows and Macintosh Camp will be making their first steps into the powerful Linux Operating System with trepidation. Yet this introduction which does guide the Newbie into a worry-free installation and early use of Linux also recognizes that the user must administer their own system on a variety of hardware environments, and that they seek competence in full use of this powerful operating system in a way that goes beyond graphical baby steps.

Product: Ubuntu Made Easy The authors have considerable experience (and it shows) with documenting Linux and in particular, the Ubuntu Distribution. Rickford Grant is the author of two other fine volumes documenting Ubuntu and Linux, and Phil Bull is an author and member of the official documentation team both for Ubuntu and the Gnome GUI project. This exciting handbook takes a unique project oriented approach leading a novice either with the Linux Operating System or with the Ubuntu Distribution through the most necessary activities of installation, updating, accommodating various hardware (e.

Product: 013254248X First, I’m glad there are people who take the time to write such a comprehensive book as this. It suited me & helped me understand a lot about using the command line & a lot of the nuisances & idiosyncrasies of Linux & various utilities. By taking the time to patiently read careful & understand each topic I’ve gained a lot of confidence to use Linux. Although there are a few chapters I haven;t finished, I can now use the book as a good reference when needed.

Product: 1590596277 I had installed Slackware Linux 12 years ago. Wow Linux has come a long way. Back then I had to initiallize nearly every component in my computer individually and manually. With today’s Ubuntu, it was all automatic. I recommend this book to any first timer looking to run Linux. I haven’t used any unix commands since college mainframe days (10 years). This book and this distribution of Linux require no previous unix command line knowledge.
