Product: 0764545744 If you’re familiar with DOS and Windows, but not UNIX, this book will lead you throught the Linux installation process. It also has extensive beginner-level explanations of basic tools for Linux; experienced users will not find much new here, however. The CD that accompanies the book has Linux, GNOME, KDE, the GIMP, Gnumeric and a host of other useful items. Rating: 4 0764545744 Count: 5

Product: 1418837237 I ordered a Guide to UNIX Using Linux for an introductory UNIX-Linux course at my university because it was the required text book. I was a bit nervous never having used UNIX-Linux in any meaningful way before much less programming in it. This book made it easy, as it is written for true beginners. The hands on projects at the end of each chapter basically spell everything out for you, which was especially helpful with those complicated to understand awk commands.

Product: 1590596277 Keir Thomas puts everything you need to get started with the distribution of Linux getting the most press these days all in one handy tome. All you’ll need is a decent computer, the software, and you’re set! The book’s chapters - 34 in all - deal with the various aspects of installing/configuring, using and personalizing Ubuntu for your tastes. Stating true to the political slant of most open source and Linux advocates, the book spares no expense when taking potshots at rival Microsoft and denouncing the company’s operating system and Windows’ implied failure to live up to its billing as a high-performance, stable, secure operating system.

Product: The Linux Programming Interface: A Linux and UNIX System Programming Handbook Essential. If you think about using C language on GNU/Linux, you need this. You can always access the man pages of every function, but this book will teach you how the system work, why things are this way, how it was in early UNIXES… Rating: 5 1593272200 Count: 29

Product: 0131101633 If you’ve worked with C, you know it is terse, compact, and sometimes unforgiving. This book was the de facto standard for C prior to ANSI, and after that remained pretty definitive. This book is small, so one might mistakenly assume it is less thorough, but C is not a big language, and it doesn’t need a big book. The important thing is to understand the features that it DOES offer, because failure to get the nuances of those can be catastrophic.

Product: 0130206016 This book is by far the best book out there for general UNIX system adminstration. The third edition is even better than the second. Whereas the second edition sometimes got bogged down in trying to mention too many different UNIX flavors, this new addition just concentrates on four main ones (HP-UX, Solaris, Red Hat Linux, and BSD). An excellent decision because it nows has great details and specifics about the four types.

Product: The Linux Programming Interface: A Linux and UNIX System Programming Handbook This book has been really helpful improving my software! If you are a Linux or UNIX programmer, you should get this book. Do you know a Linux or UNIX programmer and want to give him (her? ;-)) a gift? Get this book. I thought it was a stack of manpages, which would already have been great, but this book is the true successor to the historic Stevens works on UNIX.

Product: 0130084662 The Linux Administration Handbook (with its sister book Unix System Administration Handbook) is a great book for Linux/UNIX Administrators. I especially like the chapter on installing software. That was very helpful. Also the TCP/IP Networking chapter was helpful in solving a trace route problem. This is a great book for any administrator (even those who live on the dark side as Windows Administrators). Rating: 4 0130084662 Count: 19

Product: The Linux Command Line: A Complete Introduction This is the first time I have taken the time to review a product/book. That is how highly I thought of this book. I started on this book after using Linux for 3 months via the GUI. I really liked the writing style and hands on approach of the book. Just make sure you have a Linux terminal or virtual machine open to practice all of the commands and examples as you read them and you should have no trouble with this book.

Product: Linux Essentials The first several chapters give to the history of UNIX, after that you begin to get into the Linux Essentials as the title suggests. I bought the book as a required text for a class, but find it very useful. If you are new to UNIX/Linux this will give you great details, it is easy to read and easy to follow the examples. After reading the book I am comfortable working with Linux now both using the GUI and the command line.
