Product: 0066620732 As a huge fan of Linus Torvalds and The Linux Revolution, I waited in great anticipation for this book. Although at face value the book is pretty good, I expected a lot more. We got to hear some things on Linus’ world view and his background, but we would’ve been better rewarded with a more in depth analysis of the state of the wired and computer world, and how computing can be improved through deep proliferation of Linux.

Product: 1418837237 Got this for a class in college. The text seems to be well done, augmented with a ton of screen captures. But there is a lot of incorrect info that no longer applies to any distribution of Linux. Rather, the text even admits it in a few places, that the operating systems it comes with (Fedora and Knoppix) don’t support some of the functions in the exercises it WANTS you to do.

Product: The Linux Programming Interface: A Linux and UNIX System Programming Handbook At over 1,500 pages, this work can appear to be intimidating for some readers. However, Kerrisk does a great job of being thorough. I could see this work used as both a reference and as one that one could read an entire chapter at a time. As the title should hint at, this is for those who have a serious interest in LInux programming; it is not a light read for beginners in my opinion.

Product: 0131429019 This book is less about writing programs on UNIX as it is about the positive aspects of the (occasionally chaotic) philosophy that surrounds UNIX (and unices such as Linux and BSD) in general. Anyone who needs to develop a deep relationship with the world of unix should read this through at least once, in my opinion. It is one of the foundational texts of an entire era of hacker history.

Product: Linux Bible I taught from Negus’s Fedora Core 3 book for several semesters at the local Community College. I found it to be as good a publication as the one that I’m reviewing now. There is a tremendous amount of information on the topic presented in a readable fashion and should be on the desktop of anyone who needs to support Linux systems and applications. That being said, however, it is not a text from which to teach people just learning LINUX/UNIX, because of the lack of support materials.

Product: 013254248X This is an excellent text and I am using as of this term as the textbook for the class in Linux that I am teaching at the local Community College. The frst book on UNIX that I used twenty-five years ago was written by Sobell. He hasn’t lost his touch. Rating: 5 013254248X Count: 8

Product: How Linux Works Another great title published by No Starch Press. If you are a Linux power user, Brian definitely knows how to properly feed your desire to know more about whats happening under the hood, without getting into the details of titles such as The Linux Programming Interface or Advanced Programming in the UNIX Environment. Easy to read and follow, its a long long talk about many of the topics that make Linux what it is today.

Product: UNIX and Linux System Administration Handbook This book is annoyingly thorough. You will not likely be helped if you are trying to drill down into a specific product but it will definitely give you an exhaustive general knowledge of UNIX and Linux administration. Everyone who does UNIX and/or Linux administration should have this as a reference on their desk. Rating: 5 0131480057 Count: 29

Product: 0596006438 O’Reilly’s Hacks series have been hit or miss; mostly hits, and this second edition is no exception. Lockhart and friends bring together a set of tips and tricks in the classic O’Reilly form, and cover a scattershot of topics that people like to know. There’s over 100 hacks here, and I can’t possibly cover them all. I’ll pick and choose topics to illustrate why I think this book is a success.
